This issue is not only unusual for the placement of the tunny on the left of the facing head, but also for the shape of the ear on the feline. Typically, the ear is depicted, on all denominations of von Fritze 43, with pointed ears, where here they are rounded. Although this is likely the result of the liberty of the engraver, one wonders whether this might be an attempt to depict a totally different animal, such as a bear.May 22, 2015

This obverse has very close links to other coinage of similar period. Early drachmae of Velia have a similar type. Colin M. Kraay [Archaic and Classical Greek Coins (1976), p. 263] comments on the connection of the drachmae and this Kyzikos example, noting the rarity of deliberate reproductions of specific coin types across cities. An almost identical type is also found on a hecte emission of Mytilene (Bodenstedt 78 – Coin ID #11257).Apr 16, 2015

Kyzikos (AD 138-161) AE 34369 viewsTime of Antoninus Pius, 138-161 AD. AE34 (24.38g, 6h). Homonoia with Ephesos. Cl. Severus, strategos. Homonoia between cities proclaimed their commonality of interests, like that of "sister-cities" in the modern world, and was based on political, economic and religious connections. The cities of Asia Minor preserved this tradition under the Roman Empire, with an extensive interlinked system of such commonalities. Among the cities participating in homonoia, Ephesus seems to have been the most popular, undoubtedly due to its status as the principal cult center of Artemis. Cyzicus, an economic powerhouse due to its location on the southern shore of the Propontis, dominated the trade routes between the Black Sea and the Aegean since the Classical period. Thus, a reciprocal alliance between the major regional trader and the cult site would benefit each other immensely.Jun 14, 2014
