Kyzikos (BC 398-395) Tetradrachm - Pharnabazos2104 viewsPharnabazos, Persian Satrap and military commander, ca 398-396/5 BC. AR Tetradrachm (22mm, 14.67g, 2h). ΦAR-N-[A]-BA, head of Pharnabazos right, weaing satrapal cap tied below his chin, and diadem / Ornate ship’s prow left, decorated with a griffin and prophylactic eye; before and aft, two dolphins downward; below, tunny left. Good VF, toned, slightly granular surface. Very rare, Maffre located thirteen extant examples, eight of which are in museum collections. Ex Giessener Münzhandlung 69 (11/1994), lot 276a.
Struck during the period of warfare between Spartans and Persians, this issue commenced after Pharnabazos received the responsibility for the management of the Achaemenid navy in 398 BC, and ended with the temporary closure of the mint in 396 BC due to the Spartan presence in the area. Maffre's die study suggests that, although only 13 examples are known today, the coinage was quite massive and instrumental in facilitating Pharnabazos' naval success that culminated in the Battle of Knidos.

Near EF, old collection tone, slightly off center, some marks on the reverse. Extremely rare, only BM example known for this symmachy issue at Kyzikos. MPM coll., acquired in 1928.
The British Museum acquired the only known example of this type from a dealer in Rhodes in 1927 (cf. N. Hardwick in QT XXV [1996]), as part of a group of four coins that had been found together. As the present coin was acquired by the consignor’s grandfather in 1928, it is possible that it was part of the same find that contained the BM coin. A comparison of color photographs of the two coins reveals a similar surface appearance that is consistent with coins from a common hoard.

The attribution of a specific Julio-Claudian prince to each of these portraits remains a matter of conjecture. Mionnet believed them to be portraits of Gaius and Lucius Caesars, an interpretation the authors of RPC believed quite plausible. They do note, however, that the index to the von Aulock collection interprets this issue both as Gaius and Lucius, and Drusus and Germanicus, all of whom became potential heirs to the imperial throne. Barring any more conclusive evidence, the matter will remain unresolved.

From the severed parts grew an almond tree from which Attis sprang. Attis appears infrequently in Greek art, but he was raised in status when the Romans adopted the cult of Kybele.
