Sardeis (AD 98-180) AE 221191 views2nd-3rd century AD. AE22 - Diassarion (5.22g, 6h). Bearded head of Herakles left / CARDI - ANWN, Omphale standing right with lion's skin over shoulders, holding club in left hand and drapery with right. A splendid piece, with a fine, glossy, dark green patina. Struck in high relief and especially attractive. Good extremely fine. From a Swiss private collection.
Omphale, a mythical queen of Lydia, received Herakles to do her bidding for a year in punishment for his murder of Iphytos. He even had to help her with her spinning, and she, as we see here, wore his lion’s skin and wielded his club. Struck by his charm she later freed and married him, and their children were the ancestors of the later Heraklid dynasty of Sardeis.

Sardeis (AD 23-26) AE 27 - Germanicus and Drusus1103 viewsGermanicus and Drusus, Caesars, ca 23-26 AD. AE27 (12.14g), restruck ca 28-29 AD by Asinius Pollio, Proconsul. Drusus and Germanicus seated left in curule chairs / Legend in wreath; ΓΑΙΩ ΑΣΙΝΝΙΩ ΠΟΛΛΙΩΝΙ ΑΝΘΥΠΑΤΩ around (overstruck on original legend). VF, green patina, slightly rough surfaces.
This interesting coin appears to be an original issue, but in actuality, it is an earlier issue that is restruck with two intricate 'countermarks.' These 'countermarks' were ring-shaped punch restrikings of the legends that surround the obverse and reverse designs. While the obverse 'countermark-legend' is the same as that which appeared on the original striking, the reverse legend, originally ΕΠΙ ΑΡΧΙΕΠΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ ΚΛΕΩΝΟΣ ΣΑΡΔΙΑΝΟΥ, has been totally replaced by a new 'countermark-legend.'

In Treasures of Ancient Coinage: From the Private Collections of ANS Members, Catharine Lorber catalogued a coin of Maximinus I Thrax from Anchialus in Thrace with a very similar reverse type (see p. 121, no. 110). Lorber summarized the type as "...a symbolic map of the cosmos. Zeus, chief of the gods, is the central figure... Surrounding this scene is a broad band containing the twelve signs of the zodiac. The entire design reflects the common belief of 3rd century Romans that their lives were shaped by higher powers. This schema and variations on it were employed by numerous mints for different emperors from the mid-2nd through the mid-3rd centuries."
