Some sources suggest that the lion was considered a personification of the sun as they were thought to be able to look directly at the sun.

Although this obverse type is featured prominently on the staters of Aspendos and Selge, this fraction does seem not fit into the scheme of either city’s coinage. This type was not used on their coins until late in the 5th century, certainly too late for this issue. Also, the weight of the two known pieces, at 1.04 and 1.24 grams, does not seem to comport with the weights of the other denominations at each city during the early-mid 5th century.

Von Aulock’s catalogue of Etenna (in Münzen und Städt Pisidens) records only two types for Julia Paula from Etenna, each of which he knew from only a single specimen. The current specimen belongs to the latter denomination.

Mopsos (AD 41-54) AE 25 - Claudius318 viewsClaudius, 41-54 AD. AE25 (11.00g, 12h). Dated CY 110 (42/3 AD). Laureate head right / Zeus seated left, holding Nike and scepter; two monograms in left field, P[I] (date) behind Zeus’ head, monogram before throne. Near VF, green patina. Only one specimen cited in RPC (now in the British Museum), no additional in supplements.
This coin reveals that the two monograms in the left field (the lower monogram is off the flan of the British Museum coin) are not the same as RPC 4052 and 4053, which were struck the same year, as was tentatively (and logically) assumed by the authors.
