Temenothyrai (AD 253-268) AE 38 - Gallienus1003 viewsGallienus, 253-268 AD. AE38 / Medallion (18.51g, 6h). Titianus, archiereus. AV • KA • ΠO • ΛIKI • GAΛΛIHNOC, laureate and cuirassed bust right, wearing aegis / TITIANOC APXIE–PEVC, THMENOΘV •/PEVCIN • in two lines in exergue, monumental ornate conical cult-image on cart drawn left by yoke of oxen; before, guide standing right, steadying oxen and directing to three figures above, standing right, and two figures behind, each of whom holds a guide rope. EF, green and red patina with earthen overtones. Extremely rare. The pompa, or procession, was a prominent part of the religious festivals and games of the Greco-Roman world. Often opening the associated games or accompanying the sacrifices, monumental images of the deity would be publicly conveyed (Ovid, Trist. 4.2-3, 6). Such was the Roman pompa circensis which preceded the games in the circus and was part of the celebration of a triumph. Likewise, the inception of a new consulship occasioned celebrations which also would have included the display of such images. Some such event must have been the occasion for the pompa depicted on this medallion, though a more specific event is as yet unknown. The archierus mentioned may be the Junius Titianus who was consul with Philip I in AD 245 (Cod. Theod. 6.39.2).

Lysinia (AD 193-211) AE 36 - Septimius Severus998 viewsSeptimius Severus, 193-211 AD. AE36 (25.17g, 6h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Zeus enthroned left, holding phiale and scepter, supported by two anguipede males, each holding a cornucopia. Good VF, black-green patina with orange overtones in the devices, small spots of green deposits on reverse. Extremely rare, only the second one known, and nicer than the Boston specimen.
The reverse of this coin recalls the second major conflict of Zeus’ rise to power. After he had defeated the Titans in the Titantomachy and apportioned their former relatives to his fellow Olympians, he was compelled to resolve a conflict with the Giants, offspring of Gaia and Cronus. Known as the Gigantomachy, these chthonic half-man, half-serpent creatures attempted to wrestle power from the Olympians by casting them out of Olympus. To accomplish this, the Giants attempted to reach Olympus by heaping up one mountain range on top of the other. From above, Zeus and the other Olympians defended themselves by hurling their weapons. In the end, however, it was the assistance of Hercules, that won the day. With the final defeat of the Giants, the rule of Zeus was no longer challenged.

Lydia Uncertain (BC 4th cent) AE 12992 viewsSardeis? 4th century BC. AE12 (1.5 g, 12h). Head of Dionysios left, wearing ivy wreath / Kantharos; F and S (in Lydian) flanking. Good VF, brown patina. Very rare. Ex Gorny & Mosch 203 (3/2012), lot 197 (Naxos).
In previous sales, this issue has been attributed to either Cycladic Naxos or Syros. While both cities struck coins with same types, all of these cities’ bronzes consistently bear the first two letters of their respective ethnic flanking the base of the kantharos. On this issue, these Greek letters have been replaced by two Lydian letters, allowing its correct attribution to a mint in Lydia. Sardeis is a possibility, as it’s spelling in Lydian was Sfard.

While no decisive evidence exists for the location of the mint of the cistophori during the reigns of Vespasian through Trajan, the style, legends, and, in particular, the consistent die axis point to Rome, suggesting that these coins were minted in the capital and then sent to Asia for local use.

EF, toned, some minor roughness on the reverse. Very rare. Cohen Coll.
The obverse die on this coin was also used to strike tetradrachms in the name of Hidrieus. The die sharing and the carry-over from Hiedreius' issues of the small E on the reverse suggest that Pixodaros' tetradrachms were struck early in his reign.

Apparently unpublished. The only other example of the type I could find is from a Gorny & Mosch auction. That example weight 2.87g and is attributed as a hemidrachm. One could argue that it is a tetrobol based on the standards used at Ilion at the time. This would then be a diobol.

Aigeai (AD 216-217) Tetradrachm977 viewsTime of Caracalla, 211-217 AD. Billon Tetradrachm (11.80g). About 216-217. AIΓEAIΩN ANTΩNIINO VΠOΛEΩC Bearded, draped bust of Asclepius r., thin band in the hair, snake-entwined staff at his l. shoulder / MAKEΔONIKHC ΠICTHC ΘEOΦIΛO, Octastyle temple of Asclepius on steps, statue of Asclepius within, wearing himation, holding snake-entwined staff; in the pediment, eagle flying l.; in the field, date Γ-Σ/C (= year 263 of the local era); below, goat r. between two pellets. For a similar tetradrachm honoring likewise Asclepius, see Prieur 86, 723 and H. Bloesch, Caracalla in Aigeai, Atti (Proceedings) Congresso Internazionale di Numismatica, Roma 1961 (1965), 307 seq. Unique, unpublished and very interesting type. Very fine.
The sanctuary of Asclepius in Aegeae was certainly not as famous as the ones in Epidaurus, Kos or Pergamum, but still well known. The rather unusual use of base silver for these rare autonomous issues (dated 262 and 263 of the local era = AD 215/216 ans 216-217) as well as their types refer to an illness of Caracalla and of his attempt of being healed by visiting sanctuaries of Asclepius such as Pergamum and probably Aegeae.
