Memnon (BC 340-334) Siglos943 viewsMemnon of Rhodes, Satrap in Ionia, ca 340-334 BC. Ephesos? AR Siglos (5.46g, 3h). Persian king or hero in kneeling-running stance right, holding dagger and bow / Incuse relief map of the hinterland of Ephesos(?). Good VF, trace of encrustation on reverse. Extremely rare.
The reverse depicts what Johnston interprets as a relief map of the hinterland of Ephesos (the earliest Greek map and first physical relief map known) - the mountains Tmolos and Messogis between the river valleys of the Caister and Maeander, and three mountain ridges (Madranbaba Dagi, Karincali Dagi, and Akaba Tepesi). Johnston follows Six in suggesting that the coins were probably struck under the Persian general Memnon at Ephesos, circa 336-334 BC, in order to pay his army after he had captured the city, but before his defeat by Alexander at the Battle of Granicus in 334. However, this theory is still debated and doubted by some scholars, most recently by Leo Mildenberg.

Bodenstedt interpreted the male head on the reverse as a Daktylos or Telchine, both from mythical bands of miners and blacksmiths, sometimes described as having a sinister character. The object at the forehead could be something like a miner's lamp, but this is by no means confirmed.

VF, blue-black patina, light roughness on obverse. Extremely rare and struck with dies of fine style. Ex Wagner Coll.
Ganymede was the son of Tros, founder of Troy. A youth of great beauty, he was abducted by Zeus while the young man was tending his flocks on Mt. Ida. Carried to Olympus either by an eagle, or Zeus himself in aquiline form, Ganymede served as the god’s cupbearer in place of Hebe, as well as his eromenos. This arrangement angered Hera to such a degree that she would abandon the Trojans in their war against the Greeks. To recompense Tros for the loss of his son, Zeus provided him with a pair of horses so swift, they could cross over water, and which were the ancestors of the horses for which the Trojans were renowned.

P SEPTI GETAS C, bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust right / CIF SINOP AN N CCLII, Geta on horseback right, holding spear pointed at bound captive seated on ground below. VF, brown surfaces, a little rough. Apparently unpublished. Wagner Coll.
This coin proves that Geta joined his father and elder brother in the rather prolific coinage issues of Sinope’s civic years 252 and 253. The reverse type is something of a mystery. The bound captive is wearing a crested Phrygian style helmet and must represent an eastern foe. Yet Severus’ Persian campaigns had wrapped up around AD 199, and the last coinage issues commemorating the wars appeared around 202-203. There followed several years of relative peace, only broken in 208 by the plans to expand the conquest of Britain. There seems to be no event that can be tied to this militant type.

Nikomedeia (AD 117-138) Cistophoric Tetradrachm - Hadrian and Sabina930 viewsHadrian, with Sabina, 117-138 AD. AR Cistophoric Tetradrachm (10.61g, 6h), struck after 128 AD. Laureate head of Hadrian right / Draped bust of Sabina right, hair drawn up in elaborate plaiting. VF, toned with areas of purple iridescence. Extremely rare. Our coin, however, was clearly struck at Nicomedia, based on its obverse die link to Metcalf's type B19, no. 43 (obv. die O30). The presence of Sabina's imperial title dates the coin to after 128 AD, the year in which she was made Augusta.

One of the very rare representations of a Harpy on an ancient coin. The dating and assignment to a Carian mint are not completely secure - one finds the Harpy motif on other Carian Incerta from the second half of the 5th century BC (see Troxell, Winged Carians, p. 262, 37-40), but a mint in Lycia could also be conceivable.
