Pharnakes was awarded the Bosporan Kingdom by Pompey, for the betrayal of his father Mithradates VI, King of Pontos. Little is known of his 16-year reign except for its ending. During the Civil War between Pompey and Julius Caesar, Pharnakes tried to recapture his father's former territories in Pontos. He won a victory over Caesar's general, Domitius Calvinus, and ordered Romans in the region castrated or put to the sword. In response, Caesar launched a rapid five day war against Pharnakes in 47 BC, culminating in the battle of Zela. Caesar emerged victorious, prompting him to report back to the Senate with the now famous dictum, "Veni, Vidi, Vici" (I came, I saw, I conquered).

Pergamon (AD 193-211) AE 44 - Septimius Severus & Julia Domna879 viewsSeptimius Severus, with Julia Domna, 193-211 AD. AE44 - Medallion (43.73g, 6h). Claudianus Terpander, strategus. As the cut goes through the portrait of Caracalla, this mark is quite probably an example of damnatio memoriae.

Nikaia (AD 161-180) AE 28 - Marcus Aurelius878 viewsMarcus Aurelius, 161-180 AD. AE28 (15.63g). AVT K M AVP ANTΩNEINOC, bare-headed, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / TON KTICTH NIKAIEIC, nude Heracles seen from behind, carrying off the Erymanthian boar; club by his side, star to right. VF, dark green patina, scratches. Rare representation of a Labor of Heracles. Apparently unpublished.
The canonical representation of the fourth labor of Heracles, the capture of the Erymanthean Boar, in sculpture, painting, and coins shows the hero carrying his prize "piggy-back" over his shoulder, sometimes in the act of surprising Eurystheos with it, who hides in a pithos in fright. The present, apparently unpublished piece, has the hero, labeled "The Founder of the Nicaeans," carrying the beast in front of him. There seems to be only one numismatic parallel for this depiction: a medallion of Commodus (Gnecchi 34; Stoll 103), where Heracles is seen in a similar stance, but with the boar on a rock in front of him and the Nemean Lion behind. On this medallion the scene could be interpreted to show Heracles carrying the boar to the rock.

Mytilene (BC 377-326) EL Hekte - B-878 viewsca 377-326 BC. EL Hekte (2.54g, 6h, 11mm). Laureate head of Apollo right / Female head (Persephone and Hecate) right, wearing triangular earring, within linear square. VF.
The cataloger of this coin thought it to be a “mule†of B100 and B99. However, the reverse is different than B99 with the female wearing triangular earrings. There are no die matches for the obverse and the reverse is a new type. Noting a new emission is important, as it adds two extra years to the period of emissions of hecte from Mytilene. If the emissions did cease with Alexander, then each coin unknown to Bodenstedt supports the view that hecte were issued earlier than he suggests. It appears this is the eighth new emission unknown to Bodenstedt.
