Apameia (BC 133-48) AE 18863 viewsca 133-48 BC. AE18 (8.58g, 12h). Andron..., son of Alkios, magistrate. Laureate head of Zeus right / ΑΠΑΜ[ΕΩ]/ ANΔPON/ AΛKIOY, cult statue of Artemis Anaïtis facing. Good VF, black patina. Ex. Alighieri Coll.

Artemis Anaïtis was a fusion of the Persian goddess Anahita and the Greek Artemis. Tacitus (Annals 62) refers to the syncretic deity simply as the “Persian Diana”, who had a temple in Lydia “dedicated in the reign of Cyrus” (presumably Cyrus the Great).

Anazarbos (BC 15-AD 19) AE 31 - Germanicus861 viewsGermanicus, Caesar, 15 BC-19 AD. AE31 - Diassarion (17.72g, 12h). Dated CY 67 (48/9 AD). Bare head right / Laureate head of Zeus Olybris right before mountain with acropolis; ETOYΣ ZΞ (date) in exergue. Near EF, dark green patina, minor adjustment marks on reverse. A great portrait and highly interesting reverse type. Group CEM.

RPC gives three possible identifications for the figure on the obverse: Claudius, Britannicus, and Germanicus. Britannicus is the most easily dismissable attribution; as RPC notes (p. 595) the nomenclature would be unlikely for such a date. Levante and Ziegler describe the figure as Claudius (the latter with a question mark), but the varying portrait style and the obverse legend “TIBERIOC KΛAΔIOC KAICAP” on a parellel issue of the same year casts serious doubt. Germanicus then seems the most likely.

Magnesia (BC 210-200) Didrachm860 viewsca 210-200 BC. AR Didrachm (11.08g, 10h). Persic standard. Theodoros, son of Theogenes, magistrate. Warrior, holding lance, on horse rearing right; monogram below / Bull butting left; grain ear behind, ΘEOΔΩPOΣ/ΘEOΓENO[Y] in exergue; all within circular Maeander pattern. Good VF, a hint of porosity. Unpublished with monogram and this magistrate.

The weight and type of this piece clearly place it among the Persic standard didrachms detailed by Kinns, all of which are very rare. What is also significant about this piece is the addition of a monogram on the obverse, and the magistrate, who is unattested for all of the denominations during this period.

Kyzikos (BC 500-450) EL 1/12 Stater 860 viewsca 500-450 BC. EL 1/12 Stater (1.34g, 9mm). Lion right, gnawing on leg of prey; below, tunny right / Quadripartite incuse square. gVF.
This is the second of three known that have been offered at auction.

This obverse has very close links to other coinage of similar period. Early drachmae of Velia have a similar type. Colin M. Kraay [Archaic and Classical Greek Coins (1976), p. 263] comments on the connection of the drachmae and this Kyzikos example, noting the rarity of deliberate reproductions of specific coin types across cities. An almost identical type is also found on a hecte emission of Mytilene (Bodenstedt 78 – Coin ID #11257).
