The metropolis of Bithynia was in fact Nicomedia, but Nicaea raises a claim upon that title as shown by a coin issued under Domitian with the legend "the Nikaians, the first of the eparchias." From this claim emerged a legal dispute which was finally decided by Valens - Nicaea and Nicomedia both were allowed to call themselves the first city of Bithynia, but only Nicomedia was the metropolis. But this vain title was useless: by the new arrangement of the provinces, Chalcedon became the metropolis of the anterior Pontus. It's known from a discourse from Dion of Prusa (who lived in the time of Domitian) in which he challenged the Nicomedians to hold peace with the Nicaeans.

Fine, black olive and brick-red patina with lighter gray-green overtones. Rare and attractive mythological type. As related by Homer (Iliad 18), Achilles' armor was lost when, still sulking in his tent, he allowed his companion Patroclus to wear it while he spurred the Greeks into a battle on the plains below Troy. Overconfident, Patroclus met Hector in single combat. Mistaking Patroclus for Achilles, the Trojan hero Hector brutally killed him and dragged off Patroclus' still-armored corpse as a war prize. Achilles' mother, the sea nymph Thetis, persuaded the god Hephaestus to construct a new set of armor, among which a highly decorated shield was included.

This coinage had originally been attributed to Poseidion on Karpathos, but Cahn’s analysis of the issues bearing an inscription, πos, has conclusively shown that this legend is not an ethnic and cannot point to a mint in Poseidion. It is most likely struck from a mint on the coast of Caria or one of the other mints that used this form of double rectangular incuse: Ialysos, Kamiros, or Lindos.

Soloi (BC 333-323) Stater659 viewsBalakros, Satrap, 333-323 BC. AR Stater (10.96g, 25mm, 2h). Baaltars seated left, holding lotus-tipped scepter; grain ear and grape bunch to left; B to right, Σ (engraved over M) below throne / Draped bust of Athena facing slightly left, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet. Near EF, some porosity.
This interesting series of Balakros has been traditionally assigned to various Cilician mints based on the appearance of the letter below the throne. More recent research, as yet unpublished, suggests that all of these coins were actually struck at a central mint, most likely Tarsos. Close similarity of style of many coins assigned to different mints strongly supports this hypothesis (see, e.g., SNG France 197 and 410). The present coin provides even more compelling evidence for this conclusion, as the Σ below the throne is clearly engraved over an M (SNG France 197 is the same die, but the M has deteriorated in the die to the point of not being clear). Of course, an argument could be made that a die was transferred from Mallos, but it seems unlikely for such a prolific mint as Soloi.
