EF, dark green patina, flan crack. A superb, lifelike portrait of the young Caracalla.
This unrecorded coin provides a further expansion of the games-related legends of the coins of Nicaea. "ta megala" is otherwise unattested, and in conjunction with the full legend can be read as "Severeia Philadelpheia in respect to the great ceremonies of the Nicaeans," with the central band inscription reading "The Holy Game." In the late 3rd century a complex cycle of at least fifteen games and associated religious festivals is attested for Nicaea, honoring Dionysus the founder, Apollo Pythius, and various emperors from Augustus to Gallienus. Read along with the very young portrait of Caracalla as Augustus, the legend and type can be taken to indicate that Nicaea sponsored a grand series of festivals to celebrate the joint elevation of Caracalla to Augustus and Geta to Caesar in 198 AD.

Teuthrania (BC 400) Drachm - Prokles631 viewsca 400-399 BC. AR Drachm (3.25g, 13mm, 5h). Prokles, Satrap of Teuthrania and Halisarna. Head of Apollo left / Head of Prokles right, wearing Persian headdress; tamgha (of Prokles?) below chin. VF, toned, porous. Extremely rare, the third known.
According to Xenophon (Hell. 3.1.6), the cities of Teuthrania and Halisarna were ruled by the brothers Eurysthenes and Prokles as a hereditary territory that had been awarded to their ancestor, the exiled king of Sparta, Demaratos the Lakedaimon, by Xerxes for accompanying the Great King on his Greek expedition (see Hdt. Book 7 for the relationship between the two). The hereditary rule of Teuthrania and Halisarna by the direct descendants of Demaratos, among whom were Eurystenes and Prokles – namesakes of the twin ancestral establishers of the Spartan royal line, suggests that these rulers were not satraps, but local dynasts (for a bibliography of the discussion on the differentiation between satraps and dynasts, see O. Mørkholm, “Pergamene Coins in Copenhagen,†in Studies Mildenberg, p. 182, note 2). Thus, this is one of the earliest depictions of a Greek ruler on a coin.

The ‘Perseus’ emissions are known for denominations of stater through 1/96th. Most examples do not capture the whole ‘scene’ - commonly either the head of Perseus or Medusa being off the flan. This coin is possibly the second best published example capturing the major features [For an example that is even sharper in its detail, see Gemini IX (1/2012) lot 105].

Soloi (BC 385-350) Stater627 views385-350 BC. AR Stater (10.55g). Helmeted head of Athena right; helmet decorated with a griffin / ΣΟ-ΛΕ-ΩÎ, grape cluster on vine, within incuse square; A-B on either side. Attractively toned, good VF.
The reverse of this Soloi stater ranks among the most inventive of all Greek coinage. On the eareliest coins of Soloi the customary grape cluster was set into an incuse square as was the norm at most mints in the mid-5th century BC. Here we have a much later coin referencing the by-then-obsolete feature by placing the grape cluster in a shallow incuse surrounded by a raised field that is adorned with the ethnic and a vine leaf. To make this uncommon treatment all the more remarkable, the distinction between the raised outer shelf and the sunken square is bridged by a stem that joins the grape cluster to the vine leaf.
