The reverse of this Soloi stater ranks among the most inventive of all Greek coinage. On the eareliest coins of Soloi the customary grape cluster was set into an incuse square as was the norm at most mints in the mid-5th century BC. Here we have a much later coin referencing the by-then-obsolete feature by placing the grape cluster in a shallow incuse surrounded by a raised field that is adorned with the ethnic and a vine leaf. To make this uncommon treatment all the more remarkable, the distinction between the raised outer shelf and the sunken square is bridged by a stem that joins the grape cluster to the vine leaf.

Olba (AD 69-81) AE 24- Domitian631 viewsDomitian, as Caesar and Titus, 69-81 AD. AE24 (15.79g). ΔOMITIANOY KAIΣAPOΣ, bare head of Domitian left / AYTOKPATOPOΣ TITOY OYEΣΠACIANOY, bare head of Titus right. Olive green patina, VF. Very rare.

RPC 1720 lists five specimens, all from the same die pai. The same obverse die of Domitian Caesar was also used for RPC 1721, whose reverse names the koinon of the Lalasseis and the Cennatae, proving that the mint must have been Olba, the metropolis of this koinon. RPC considers this die to have functioned as an obverse die for RPC 1721, but as a reverse die for RPC 1720. But more likely it functioned as an obverse die for both coins.

Karia Uncertain (BC 500-480) Stater630 viewsca 500-480 BC. AR Stater (10.82g). Lion's head left with foreleg below / Dipartite incuse square, parted diagonally. Struck from rusty dies. VF.

Attributed to Issos in Kilikia in earlier times, the obverse type is clearly reminiscent of Karian coins (cf. SNG Kayhan 929-30). In fact, B. Head had pondered Knidos as the place of minting (Historia Numorum, 1st ed. 1886), p. 523 note). This is certainly wrong - both the standard and the fabric are different - but Karia is still likely to be the area of this issue.

A similar female portrait is to be found on a rare and unpublished Stater of Lampsakos [see CNG Auc. 100 lot 74].
