Samos (BC 360-340) Tetradrachm607 viewsca 360-340 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.12g). Lion’s mask facing / ΣA, Athena standing to right, brandishing spear and holding shield decorated with a gorgoneion; owl standing to left, olive- branch above; within an incuse square. gVF. Unique. Prospero coll.
It has been suggested by Hurter that these Athenian types might coincide with the dominance of a pro-Athenian faction at Samos shortly before Athens began to lay siege to the island in 366 BC.

(BC 169-150) Mithradates IV - Tetradrachm607 viewsMithradates IV, ca 170/169–150 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.83g), struck in Sinope ca 169 BC. Diademed head right / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΜΙΘΡΑΔΑΤΟΥ - ΦΙΛΟΠΑΤΟΡΟΣ / ΚΑΙ ΦΙΛΑΔΕΛΦΟΥ, Perseus, naked but for cloak over his shoulders, standing facing and holding gorgoneion and harpa; monogram in lower left field. Extremely rare and among the finest specimens known. An elegant portrait of fine Hellenistic style struck in high relief on a very large flan. Old cabinet tone and aEF. Ex Leu sale 48 (1989), lot 209. From the von Aulock and Salvesen collections.
The reverse of this tetradrachm, which may perhaps predate Mithradates IV’s marriage to his sister, Laodike, depicts the hero Perseus. He appears here, not so much because Mithradates IV wanted to recall the myth of the hero, but because of an old Greek folk etymology that made Perseus an ancestor of the Persians. The Persian Great King Xerxes I (486-465 BC) was already aware of this etymology at the time of his invasion of mainland Greece (480 BC) and tried to use it to convince the Argives to capitulate. The link between Perseus and the Persians was deeply entrenched by 2nd century BC and Mithradates IV, who was himself of Iranian descent, used it to associate the Mithradatic dynasty of Pontus with the greatness of the Achaemenid Persian Empire. The irony of using a Greek hero to advertise a connection to an Iranian empire that was frequently in conflict with the states of Greece is palpable. This irony is further compounded by the otherwise conscious Hellenizing of the obverse type and legend: Mithradates IV wears the diadem of a Hellenistic king rather than the tiara of an Iranian ruler, and the reverse legend is entirely Greek in its use of titles like Philopator (â€Father-lovingâ€) and Philadelphos (â€Brother-lovingâ€). The combination of types and inscriptions on this tetradrachm is wonderfully schizophrenic in the desire to simultaneously tout Mithradates IV as an Iranian scion of the Persian Empire and as a Hellenistic king in emulation of Alexander the Great, the destroyer of that same empire.

Philadelphia (AD 37-41) AE 19 - Caligula606 viewsGaius (Caligula), 37-41 AD. AE19 (4.27g, 2h). Artemon, son of Hermogenos, moneyer. ΓΑΙΟC ΚΑΙCΑP ΓΕPΜΑÎ[ΙΚΟC] / ÎΕΟΚΑΙCΑPΕΩÎ, laureate head right / ΑΓΡΙΠΠΙ[Î]ΑΠΑP[ΤΕΜΩ]ΠΕΠΜΟΓΕÎΟC, Agrippina Senior seated right on chair with ornate legs, holding sceptre and cornucopiae. VF, choice jade green patina. Rare.
It appears that the names of locals on the coins of Philadelphia do not represent magistrates in charge of a specific office, but rather citizens who may have sponsored the production of a certain series of coins. Artemon, in this case, may have dedicated a shrine to the emperor's mother, and celebrated the event with a coin issue.

Mytilene issued a rare series of bronzes honoring several distinguished local citizens. While another shows Julia Procula (see CNG 72, lot 1161), probably the mother of Flavia Nicomachis, this coin depicts Flavia Nicomachis herself, as well as her father Sextus Nicomachus. An inscription from Mytilene, naming both Procula and Nicomachis, lists them as benefactors of the city. Based on the portrait styles of these individuals, this coin is dated to the reign of Antoninus Pius.

Germanikopolis (AD 198-217) AE 27 - Caracalla604 viewsCaracalla, 198-217 AD. AE27 (14.32g, 6h). Laureate and cuirassed bust right / Cityscape: two civic buildings between two towers. VF, glossy green patina. Extremely rare and highly interesting type.
Richmond (“The Town of Germanicopolis-Gangra in Paphlagonia†NC 1929, pp. 310-2) describes the central structures on the reverse as two distinct buildings, perhaps the city’s forum and basilica, with a narrow alley running between. Robertson, however, suggests that they may represent a single gatehouse, an idea initially dismissed by Richardson due to the uncharacteristically pitched roofs. The current specimen lacks what seems to be a curved wall seen on the latter two specimens referenced above, but exhibits an even more pronounced break between the central structures. They cannot form a gate, and must therefore represent two civic buildings, the smaller of which is shown in perspective. The type can thus be interpreted as a cross-section of the city; the two side towers represent two opposite entrances, with a circular wall around (on at least some specimens), and depicting in the center what must have been among the most important civic buildings.
