Mytilene (BC 521-478) EL 1/12 Stater - B-587 viewsca 530-522 BC. EL Hemihekte (1.25g, 9.4mm). Forepart of winged boar, right / Incuse head of man-headed bull / river god, left. Obverse struck from rusty die, otherwise gVF. Carr coll.

The cataloguer at CNG described this coin as “Unpublished. Unique, and this issue is unknown in any other denomination.” A fascinating and important coin, as it confirms that a fraction, in addition to Hekte, was issued by Mytilene. Bodenstedt suggested a series of fractional emissions could be attributed to Mytilene - these have a calf head facing right on the obverse and incuse square on the reverse. This attribution is disputed by many scholars (see Coin ID #12959). In this context, this new fraction is of significant interest.

Magnesia (AD 138-161) AE 34 - Antoninus Pius586 viewsAntoninus Pius, 138-161 AD. AE34 (26.53g), struck under grammateus L. Dioskurides Gratos Metr. [T AI]ΛIOC KAICAP - ANTΩNEINO[C], laureate head right / EΠI ΔIOCKOVPIΔ[OV] ΓP - MAΓ - NHTΩN, Themistokles, nude to hips, sitting left on throne with lion's-feet, left hand at parazonium hanging at his left side, with right hand holding an oval shield inscribed with (?)EM/(?)AN/OC in three lines set on cippus; right behind him a horse standing right, head turned left. Very rare, F+. Hoeft coll.

This coin was very difficult to interpret because of the depiction of the male figure, nude, with parazonium, very tall upper part of the body, but it suggests Themistokles. There is another rare type of him sacrificing before an altar, where he is similarily depicted. Themistokles is the famous hero of Salamis who had to flee from Athens after an ostrakismos. His former enemy, the Persian king Artaxerxes I, accommodated him and made him satrap of Lampsakos and Magnesia ad Maeandrum due to his merits at Salamis.

This is a variant of Bodenstedt 16 in as much as the ram’s head faces left instead of right. Possibly unique as it is the only one to appear at auction and no other example appears in standard references.

Argaeus surmounted by wreath; B NЄ across field, ЄTOVC Δ (date) in exergue. Good VF. Without the usual countermark.

Out of 43 tridrachms of Gordian III’s fourth year surveyed by Bland, 33 carried the Tyche countermark, always on the reverse. They seem to be linked to a Helios countermark applied to his bronze coinage, normally found in this case on the obverse. The variation in silver content and weight of Caesarean silver issues is quite astounding. Bland’s study of 105 silver coins of Gordian III have the following weight ranges: 6.72-11.17g for tridrachms, 4.02-6.20g for didrachms, and 2.08-4.13g for drachms. The fineness of the coins varies from 30% to 63%.

In expiation for his murder of Iphitos at Tiryns, Hercules was compelled by the Delphic oracle to serve Omphale, Queen of Lydia, for one year. During this time, he performed a number of labors, similar to those which he undertook while serving Eurystheus, including the capture of the Kerkopes, the killing of the Syleus, and the conquest of the city of the Itones. At the same time, he was forced to wear women’s clothing and spin wool and, according to the poet Ovid (Fasti 2.305), Omphale even wore Hercules’ lion skin and carried his club while ordering him about. However, these actions seemed to have little ill-effect on the hero; after his year’s service was completed, Hercules married Omphale.
