Miletopolis (BC 100-AD 100) AE 21 - Axiochus560 viewsAxiochus, 1st cent BC-1st cent AD. AE21 (5.50g, 12h). O ΔHMOC AXIOCON, bare head right / [MIΛHTOΠOΛITΩN], draped bust of Athena right, wearing Corinthian-style helmet and [aegis]. Near VF, brown patina. Extremely rare. Ex Villemur Coll.

While the portrayal on the obverse of this coin may be either the individual Axiochus or the Demos of Miletopolis, the obverse inscription makes it clear that this coin was struck to honor one of that city’s benefactors. By following Greek epigraphic convention, the name of the dedicatee (AXIOCON) is placed in the accusative case, while the verb of dedication is not indicated, but implied: “The Demos honors Axiochus.” Just who this Axiochus was remains a mystery. The name is not unknown in the Greek world (a dialogue of the same name ascribed to Plato is known), and several Romanized Axiochi are attested in inscriptions and graffiti (cf. CIL VI.13.19 - Sex. Pompeius Axiochus). What is clear is that Axiochus was one of the numerous euergetai, or benefactors of the Roman Empire: wealthy individuals who supported public projects, or liturgies, in their hometowns.

Akmoneia (AD 251-253) AE 27 - Volusian560 viewsVolusian, 251-253 AD. AE27 (10.89g, 6h). AVT K OVIB AΦ ΓAΛΛOC OYOΛOYCIANOC, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / AKMO/ NЄΩN, Horseman, holding whip, on galloping horse right; below horse, river-god Sindros reclining left; to right, two females (deities, or personifications of nature) standing left on rocky outcropping. VF, black-green patina with earthen overtones. Ex Alighieri Coll.

The main figure of the horseman, in association with the presonifications of the river-god and the presence of the female figures (whether themselves personifications of the surrounding countryside, or actual individuals), may represent an otherwise unknown foundation myth for Acmoneia.

Sardeis (AD 198-217) AE 35 - Caracalla560 viewsCaracalla, 198-217 AD. AE35 (20.45g). Apparently the second known specimen. Smooth green patina, VF.

The type appears to commemorate some honor granted to the cult of Kore at Smyrna by Caracalla during his sole reign. No coins of Smyrna naming the archon Mithros were known to Head in BMC Lydia, p. civ, but there are two coins of Julia Domna naming this magistrate in SNG von Aulock, 3156 and 8256.

In expiation for his murder of Iphitos at Tiryns, Hercules was compelled by the Delphic oracle to serve Omphale, Queen of Lydia, for one year. During this time, he performed a number of labors, similar to those which he undertook while serving Eurystheus, including the capture of the Kerkopes, the killing of the Syleus, and the conquest of the city of the Itones. At the same time, he was forced to wear women’s clothing and spin wool and, according to the poet Ovid (Fasti 2.305), Omphale even wore Hercules’ lion skin and carried his club while ordering him about. However, these actions seemed to have little ill-effect on the hero; after his year’s service was completed, Hercules married Omphale.

The cataloguer at CNG described this coin as “Unpublished. Unique, and this issue is unknown in any other denomination.” A fascinating and important coin, as it confirms that a fraction, in addition to Hekte, was issued by Mytilene. Bodenstedt suggested a series of fractional emissions could be attributed to Mytilene - these have a calf head facing right on the obverse and incuse square on the reverse. This attribution is disputed by many scholars (see Coin ID #12959). In this context, this new fraction is of significant interest.
