Eikonion (AD 138-161) AE 21 - Antoninus Pius528 viewsAntoninus Pius, 138-161 AD. AE21 (4.97g, 6h). IM-P C T A H ANTONINVS, laureate head of Antoninus Pius right / COL ICO, Athena standing facing, head left, holding Nike presenting wreath, and spear; shield leaning against spear at her feet; in left field, serpent. Very rare. Sandy-black patina. Very fine.
Hans von Aulock knew of seven specimens of this type, all in museum collections. He notes the obverse legend ending ANTONINOC, but this seems unlikely given that the city was a Roman colony since the reign of Hadrian and thus should have been using Latin legends on its coinage. Unfortunately, the single specimen he illustrates is struck off center, the British Museum specimen has incomplete legends, and the rest of the examples he cites are not otherwise published, so the spelling cannot be confirmed. The specimen offered here, though, very clearly spells ANTONINVS, which suggests that Von Aulock's reading is in error.

Lairbenos is a pre-Greek name of Apollo from Asia Minor. Some put it to 'labrys' = double axe, others to Hetitian 'labarnas' = master. But more possibly it is a toponymikon or ethnikon. There are several sanctuaries of Lairbenos in Phrygia with numerous votive inscriptions especially in Dionysopolis and Motela.

Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Nymph advancing right, with billowing veil, holding the infant Zeus; three Kuretes around, each in armor and holding sword and shield. VF, green patina, a bit rough. Rare.
The Kuretes share some of the attributes of the Korybantes, dancing divinities associated with the worship of Kybele, but their specific role in Greek mythology was to serve as the protectors of the infant Zeus while he was hidden away on Crete, safe from his jealous father Kronos. Their militant dancing, accompanied by the clashing of swords on shields, drowned out the cries of the infant. The nursing of Zeus, according to certain traditions, was left to the sister nymphs Adrasteia and Ida, who fed Zeus with the the milk of the she-goat Amaltheia (in other traditions Amaltheia is a third nymph).

Palea Paphos was one of the most important pilgrimage centres in the Greek world due to its famous Sanctuary of Aphrodite; the goddess herself was born of the sea near Paphos, and floated in on a scallop shell. When she arose, she was hailed as 'Cyprian'. The Sanctuary of Aphrodite continued to flourish well into the Roman era. Several Roman emperors honoured the shrine, and it was visited by Titus in 69 AD when the future emperor was on his way to Egypt. He consulted the oracle of Aphrodite, and was told that he had a great future. The sanctuary was rebuilt by the Romans after the earthquake of 76/77 AD, in a design that preserved the layout of the original. The cult of Aphrodite survived at Palea Paphos until the 4th century AD, when Emperor Theodosius outlawed paganism. Today, virtually nothing remains of the Sanctuary save the holy ground itself.
