Ashton links this and several related coinage issues to the period immediately after the great earthquake that struck Rhodes circa 229-226 BC. The city and port were devastated, and the great bronze Colossus beside the harbor was demolished. Greek states all over the eastern Mediterranean shipped in relief supplies, with Ptolemy III of Egypt being particularly generous. The Zeus head may reflect an Egyptian connection - the Rhodians honoring their benefactors.

Magnesia (BC 400-350) Drachm513 viewsca 350-300 BC. AR Drachm (3.30g, 15mm, 6h). Laureate head of Apollo right / Forepart of bull butting right; kerykeion above. VF, flat strike in centers, porous. Unpublished.
The style and fabric of the coin are consistent with the coinage of Ionia in the mid-late 4th century BC. The Apollo / bull butting types are common at Magnesia, but the absence of any maeander pattern casts doubt upon an attribution to that city. There are rare gold issues with these types at Samos (cf. Barron pl. XXX, 14-5), but it is unlikely that this is a previously unknown silver issue from that mint.

Kebren (BC 480-440) Obol513 viewsca late 6th-early 5th century BC. AR Hemiobol (0.58g, 9mm). Ram’s head left; below, tunny fish right / Quadripartite incuse square. Good VF, toned, some granularity.
The obverse type of a ram’s head left is very similar, stylistically, to the early coinage of Kebren. Although the type is not published with a tunny fish beneath the ram’s head, which is usually indicative of Kyzikos, there are other symbols, such as a bird, that do appear on the Kebren coinage beneath the ram.
