Wreathed head of young Dionysos right/ Facing large head of satyr with small ‘animal ears’, shaggy hair, close cropped beard and moustache, furrowed brow, ivy leaf top right in field, all within linear square. EF. Carr coll.

Bodenstedt notes 16 obv. and 25 rev. dies. His reverse die varieties can be simplified to small variations of 3 different head types and 4 “motifs” that occur in the field. The 3 different head types are: small bald head with long tousled beard swept back, smooth forehead, long pointed ears upward; larger head, shaggy hair and close cropped beard and moustache, small ‘animal ears’, furrowed or smooth brow; as previous type but shaggy hair (as in this example). The 4 “motifs” are additions in the field: an ivy leaf, upper right and sometimes lower left corners; grapes, lower left corner (Bodenstedt makes a distinction on basis of a stem being present); 8-armed/beamed star top right corner; and, 8-armed/beamed star top left corner.

These 7 simplified reverse varieties/types for Bodenstedt 90 have been described elsewhere on this website (see Coin ID #11346). Second known from auction.

Lampsakos (BC 500-450) EL 1/6 Stater (or Tetrobol?) 484 viewsca 500-450 BC. EL Hekte (or AR Tetrobol?) (2.31g, 10mm). Forepart of Pegasos right / Quadripartite incuse square. VF. Carr coll.

Very rare and catalogued as pale electrum giving the appearance of being a silver coin. There is some substantial debate surrounding these issues. While a rare coin, there are examples of both the left and right facing Pegasos types in what is both clearly EL and what appears to be solely silver. Would the ancients accept a coin that did not have a strong yellowish tint as true EL? The original description by J.P. Six as EL is followed by CNG (see CNG 94, lot 459) and Roma (this coin). The weight is consistent with a Hekte.

Herakles standing r. resting on club with r., lion's skin on shoulder, wreath in l.; on r. Hesione standing l., holding dress with l. hand and raising r.; sea-monster between them. gVF.

This is a new theme for the coins and not a tactful one. Laomedon had cheated Poseidon of his promised hire for building the walls of Troy and Poseidon sent a sea-monster to ravage the land. In response to an oracle Laomedon sought to avert disaster by chaining his daughter Hesione on the sea shore to be the monster's victim. Heracles, arriving in the Troad in connection with the Argonautic expedition or in pursuit of the girdle of the queen of the Amazons, killed the monster and rescued the maiden. Laomedon promised him, as a reward, the horses which Zeus had given him, but when he went back on his promise, Heracles later assaulted and captured the city. The Trojan part in this affair is far from edifying and it is not surprising that the story was dropped from the repertory of the die-sinkers (A.R. Bellinger, Troy, The Coins. Supplementary Monograph 2, University of Cincinnati, 1961, p.64).

Mytilene (BC 454-427) EL Hekte - B55482 viewsca 454-427 BC. EL Hekte (2.49g, 11mm). Head of Athena right, wearing Corinthian helmet / Two overlapping female heads facing each other, hair in archaic braids all within incuse square. Obverse nicely centered on flan, good VF. Carr coll.

Eight examples known to Bodenstedt. This is the fifth further example to appear at auction. The reverse is an amazing picture puzzle. Examining the reverse of B55 emissions, one can note two different types: one type has an overlap of the heads such that an optical illusions is created where they appear to have a common eye; the other type, each head retains a distinct eye in profile. The overlap of the heads is a reverse that also appears on a later emission, B62 - part of a different series for Bodenstedt.
