Stratonikeia (AD 138-161) AE 35 - Antoninus Pius & Marcus Aurelius482 viewsAntoninus Pius, with Marcus Aurelius as Caesar, 138-161 AD. AE35 (30.60g, 5h). Athenokles, magistrate. Laureate bust of Antoninus Pius right, vis-à-vis bareheaded and draped bust of Marcus Aurelius left / Zeus Panamarus right on horse; lighted and garlanded altar to right. VF, black-green patina with traces of olive and red, a few adjustment marks. Fine style portraits. Apparently the second known and possibly the only one not in a public collection. Group CEM.

The specimen Imhoof-Blumer cited was from his own collection. Because of the coin’s rarity, it was probably donated to the Berlin Münzkabinett, as it does not appear in the known sales of Imhoof-Blumer’s coins. The Berlin collection, however, remains unpublished, so there is no way of determining that coin’s further disposition.

Very rare, about VF. Hoeft coll.

Pat Lawrence has pointed out that the reverse cites the Nike which is held by Athena Sidetes in her outstretched hand on the tetradrachms of Antiochos VII Euergetes Sidetes who came from Side. The pomegranate was the symbol of Side (which means old-anatolian = pomegranate!), the snake obviously an allusion to Erychthonios.

The reverse appears to be that of Bodenstedt 65ß. Thus this example could be a hybrid B64/65. On the other hand, this could be an example of a die break which links the reverses of B64 and B65. See Coin ID #11245 for similar emission.
