The exact nature of the unusual monument on the reverse, which serves as a recurring type on the coinage of Etenna, is uncertain. While some coins show an abstract design on the face of the monument (see, for example, von Aulock 588) others clearly show a series of facing busts (see especially von Aulock 541-2). We might suppose that this was a pantheistic monument honoring the principal deities of Etenna.

Mytilene (BC 377-326) EL Hekte - B95 var.471 viewsca 377-326 BC. EL Hekte (2.54g, 9.5mm, 11h). Laureate head of Apollo (Dionysos?) facing right / Head of female facing right, drapery at neck, within linear square. Good VF. Carr coll.
A variation of the usual B95 type or a distinct new type. The obverse head appears different to that of Apollo and more like Dionysos with a laurel wreath rather than the usual ivy leaves. The female head on the reverse is unusually large. CNG described this coin as: “This is one of the few coins of this type that we have handled where the obverse portrait may actually be Dionysos, as there is what looks like a pinecone at the top of the laurel wreath. Normally, Dionysos would be wreathed with ivy leaves, but the wreath on this coin, and this type, usually looks more like laurel leaves. It is possible that this type is either an engraver’s error, or was meant to be a distinct issue different from the Apollo obverse typeâ€.

The Kaystrianoi (Caystriani), the people of the plain of the Lower Kayster (HN). The river Kayster, today Karasu, has been celebrated by the ancient poets as the favorite residence of the swans. Ephesos was located on the mouth of the Kayster. The plains were first mentioned by Homer, Ilias 2.461. The coins were struck probably in Hypaipa (HN).

VF, black-green patina with traces of olive and red, a few adjustment marks. Fine style portraits. Apparently the second known and possibly the only one not in a public collection. Group CEM.
The specimen Imhoof-Blumer cited was from his own collection. Because of the coin’s rarity, it was probably donated to the Berlin Münzkabinett, as it does not appear in the known sales of Imhoof-Blumer’s coins. The Berlin collection, however, remains unpublished, so there is no way of determining that coin’s further disposition.

Phaselis (BC 550) Stater470 viewsca 550 BC. AR Stater (19mm, 10.88g). Prow of galley left, terminating in a forepart of a boar / Rough incuse punch. EF, toned. Apparently unique. Ex Princeton Economics, Armstrong (CNG E271, 1/2012, lot 21); Triton II (12/1998), lot 448.
This piece, with the prow in schematic style and a plain, rough incuse, clearly belongs to Heipp-Tamer’s first series. Only right-facing prow types had been previously known for this earliest phase of the mint (and Heipp-Tamer only knew of two coins - a stater and a drachm - for the entire series).
