Ares slew Halirrhothius, son of Poseidon, for assaulting Ares' daughter, Alcippe. The site where Ares came before the gods for judgement became the Areopagos (Hill of Ares) in Athens, the location of the Athenian law courts. Ares was absolved of murder. It is unknown why this event had such import for Syedra, but the scene appears frequently on its 3rd century coinage.

This is a nice spec. of the so-called Homonoia Coinage which was issued in Asia Minor for two joint cities as expression for their entente cordiale. This one was struck in Ephesos joint with Alexandria in Egypt.

Although perhaps originally conceived as cthonic goddess similar to Artemis, in Greek mythology Hekate was transformed into a nefarious deity associated with witches, ghosts, and curses. The origin of her cult can perhaps be traced to Caria, where her most prominent cult site of Lagina was located and where names stemming from Hekate (itself apparently derived from Hekatos, or “far-shootingâ€, an epithet of Apollo) are well–attested. From at least the Classical period she was shown in triplicate form as a goddess of the crossroads, comparable to the Roman Trivia, whose image was set up at boundaries to keep out evil spirits.

The inscription shows this issue was produced at the expense of P. Claudius Attalus (ΠΚΛ ΑΤΑΛΟC), described as 'high priest' (APXIEPATEYΩN) and credited with paying for this coinage (ANEΘHKE ΛΑΟΔΙΚΕΩÎ). Attalus, perhaps a distant descendant of the Pergamene kings and a distinguished man, held citizenship at both Laodicea and Smyrna. On some coins struck at Smyrna he is described as COΦICTHC ('sophist'), meaning he was a salaried teacher of philosophy and rhetoric.
