Etenna (AD 193-211) AE 32 - Septimius Severus420 viewsSeptimius Severus, 193-211 AD. AE32 (19.74g, 6h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Cult monument decorated with five facing busts, flanked by a statue of Hercules, holding patera, lion skin, and club to the left and a statue of a bearded male figure, holding patera and uncertain object to the right, each set on base. VF, brown patina, minor roughness. Very rare, only two known to von Aulock.
The exact nature of the unusual monument on the reverse, which serves as a recurring type on the coinage of Etenna, is uncertain. While some coins show an abstract design on the face of the monument (see, for example, von Aulock 588) others clearly show a series of facing busts (as on the current coin). We might suppose that this was a pantheistic monument honoring the principal deities of Etenna.

Laodikeia (AD 62-65) AE 16 - Poppaea419 viewsPoppaea, Augusta, 62-65 AD. AE16 (4.39g, 12h). Julia Zenonis, possibly the wife of the euergetes Julius Andronicus. Struck ca 62 AD(?). Draped bust right / Aphrodite standing facing, head right, holding scepter and apple. Good VF, brown patina. Only two cited in RPC and three on CoinArchives. Possibly the sixth and finest known.
A rare and interesting instance of a prominent local woman signing her city’s coinage. In RPC, it is tentatively suggested that Julia Zenonis was the wife of the euergetes Julius Andronicus, with the husband being responsible for the larger module coins, either pseudo–autonomous or in the name of Nero, and the wife responsible for two smaller module types, one pseudo–autonomous and the other (as our coin) in the name of the empress Poppaea. This high honor of having her name appear on Laodicea’s coinage very likely stemmed from her belonging to the Zenonid family, one of the wealthiest and most powerful in Asia Minor.

The model for this reverse type is a Hellenistic sculpture copied by the Romans - the most famous copy being Glykon’s ‘Farnese Hercules’ that was discovered in the excavations of the Baths of Caracalla in 1546. The statue depicts the hero at rest after completing his Labors: he is shown standing with his club propped under his left arm, supporting the weight of his muscular frame, his head slightly nodding forward in a weary attitude, and he holds the apples of the Hesperides behind his back in his right hand.
