Typically, the ethnic found on the coins of Holmoi, if not truncated, are in the form OΛMITIKON, OΛMVTIKON, or OΛMITON. The form on this coin, ending -AN, is possibly the result of an engraver accustomed to the Aeolic dialect, rather than the standard Attic. Apart from this specimen and another from the same reverse die that appeared in CNG 70, lot 318, there are apparently no recorded coins with this variation of the ethnic.

CNG attributes this issue to 'Themistokles (?)', stating that it fits well into the coinage of Themistokles and Archepolis as described by Nollé and Wenniger. (BC 490-460) Uncertain Dynast - Stater365 viewsUncertain dynast, ca 490/80-470/60 BC. AR Stater (20mm, 9.58g). Forepart of boar right / Triskeles in linear square within incuse square. VF, toned, die break and old scuffs under tone on obverse.

This coin defies placement within the early groups defined by Vismara (Falghera), as the obverse style is a match for the Predynastic and Protodynastic A groups, while the reverse (anepigraphic triskeles) is canonical for Protodynastic B. Nevertheless, production of all of these groups overlap in the period 490/80-470/60 BC, to which this coin must belong.

The issue is probably related to the military campaigns against the Parthians, conducted between 195-198 AD. After returning from the East, the emperor decided to permanently encamp the second of three Parthian legions near Rome in the Castra Albana (Albano Laziale).

An interesting type which copies a very identifiable shrine found on the coinage of Antioch. The engraver even went so far as to copy the “Δ Є” found on the Antiochene types, which is generally thought to stand for the office of the emperor as tribune (Δημαρχικης Єξουςιας) or, more likely, for the four eparchies (Δ Єπαρχειων) which the Antiochene coinage would circulate in: Commagene, Coele-Syria, Syria, and Phoenicia.
