Lykia Uncertain (BC 380-370) Obol 343 viewsUncertain Dynast, ca 380-370 BC. AR Obol (10mm, 0.56g, 12h). Murex shell / Sea serpent (ketos?). VF, toned, porous. Extremely rare.
For an obol of Mithrapata with the same obverse type and style, cf. Klein 606 and BMC Lycia 8. While the similarity of the obverse of this type to the Mithrapata issue suggests an attribution to that dynast, all of his coins bear at least a portion of his name, and there are no letters on this coin. As types tend to be transferred from dynast to dynast, it is possible that this issue is from a contemporary of Mithrapata. The sea serpent, though, is not present on any published specimen of a Lycian dynast, which suggests that these coins may not be from the dynasts' series at all.

Mida, the Greek goddess of oaths, was principally worshipped in Phrygia. She was often equated with the earth and mother goddess Cybele - whose form she takes on this coin. Evidence of her worship, in fact, has caused one of the great archeological misconceptions of the modern era: the discovery of what was believed to be the tomb of King Midas at the site of Midas Sehr in the 19th Century was, in fact something less remarkable: a shrine dedicated to Midas as the equivalent of Cybele.

Uncertain (AD 69-81) AE 18 - Domitian340 viewsDomitian, as Caesar, 69-81 AD. AE18 (4.36g, 7h). M. Hirrius Fronto Neratius Pansa, legatus Augusti. Struck 77/8-79/80 AD. Laureate head right / [ЄΠI]/ ΠANCA/ ΠPЄBЄYTOY in three lines. VF, brown patina, areas of flat strike, die break on reverse. Apparently unique. Ex Wagner Coll.
A logical guess for the place of minting would be Caesarea, the principal mint in the region, where similar coins carrying this legend were struck under Titus. The authors of RPC reject this attribution, however, based on the absence of a date and the metal composition.
