A rare and interesting instance of a prominent local woman signing her city’s coinage. The appearance of Claudia’s name very likely stemmed from her belonging to the Zenonid family, one of the wealthiest and most powerful in Asia Minor. A relative, Julia Zenonis, also signed coins of Laodicea from the reign of Nero. The male figure on the reverse, possibly an athlete, may refer to the building of a new stadium in 79/80 AD (RPC II p. 194).

Mida, the Greek goddess of oaths, was principally worshipped in Phrygia. She was often equated with the earth and mother goddess Cybele - whose form she takes on this coin. Evidence of her worship, in fact, has caused one of the great archeological misconceptions of the modern era: the discovery of what was believed to be the tomb of King Midas at the site of Midas Sehr in the 19th Century was, in fact something less remarkable: a shrine dedicated to Midas as the equivalent of Cybele.
