Mytilene (BC 377-326) EL Hekte - B-959 viewsca 377-326 BC. EL Hekte (2.5g, 10mm). Female head right, hair bound with ribbons / Panathenaic amphora, palm branch to left; all within linear square. gVF/EF. Carr coll.
The reverse depicts an amphora, described as “Panathenaic,†as amphoras of this shape, containing olive oil, were given to winners at the Panathenaic Games in Athens. The palm alongside the amphora is also suggestive of a victory. It has been suggested that in the circumstances of “victory,†the obverse might be a depiction of Nike – the goddess of victory. This coin type is unknown to Bodenstedt, but three examples have appeared in auction. The first and third examples are from the same dies. This current example is the second known and is from different dies.

Mytilene (BC 412-378) EL Hekte - B68945 viewsca 430-400 BC. EL Hekte (2.56g). Female head facing right, wearing hair-net / Beardless head with grotesque features facing left, wearing a modius-like object at forehead, the hair covered by net; thin square frame, all in incuse square. About EF/VF.
Bodenstedt interpreted the male head on the reverse as a Daktylos or Telchine, both from mythical bands of miners and blacksmiths, sometimes described as having a sinister character. (A common feature of mythical blacksmiths - Hephaestus is the exception, but he was physically handicapped instead). The object at the forehead could be something like a miner's lamp, but this is by no means confirmed.

Mytilene (BC 377-326) EL Hekte - B-864 viewsca 377-326 BC. EL Hekte (2.54g, 6h, 11mm). Laureate head of Apollo right / Female head (Persephone and Hecate) right, wearing triangular earring, within linear square. VF.
The cataloger of this coin thought it to be a “mule†of B100 and B99. However, the reverse is different than B99 with the female wearing triangular earrings. There are no die matches for the obverse and the reverse is a new type. Noting a new emission is important, as it adds two extra years to the period of emissions of hecte from Mytilene. If the emissions did cease with Alexander, then each coin unknown to Bodenstedt supports the view that hecte were issued earlier than he suggests. It appears this is the eighth new emission unknown to Bodenstedt.

Mytilene (AD 138-192) AE 27 - Lesbonax819 viewsLesbonax, period of the Antonines, 138-192 AD. AE27 (7.72g). Otherwise apparently unpublished and unique. Minor adjustment marks, good very fine.
This coin depicting Lesbonax is one of a series honoring noteworthy citizens. Lesbonax known from only a few preserved rhetorical and philosophical works was also depicted with beard thus as a proper philosopher (SNG von Aulock 1751). Deified as “the New Hero†Lesbonax obviously had to be equaled to the gods by depicting him as Dionysos. “Der kleine Pauly†lists three separate people who were called Lesbonax while others rather keep it by one or two. Other portraits honoring distinguished local citizens are known of Julia Procula, Flavia Nicomachis, Sextus Nicomachus, Theophanes, Archedamis, Nausikaa and Sappho. Except Sappho most of these citizens are more or less obscure historical figures.

Antissa (BC 400-300) Obol715 viewsca 400 BC. AR Obol (8mm, 0.71g, 6h). Youthful male head (apparently a sub-Saharan African) / Club, shown vertically with head below, dividing Α-Î; all within lozenge-shaped incuse. Apparently unpublished and unknown. A fascinating and intriguing coin, toned and clear as found. VF. Acquired in Munich in the late 1990s or early 2000s as "vermutlich Ainos."
There are quite a number of ancient coins that have clear types and easily decipherable legends, yet they still remain uncertain in their attribution. This piece was long thought to be from Ainos, probably because of its lozenge-shaped incuse and the supposed Α - - Πlegend could be paralleled by the early silver diobols of Ainos (May 22 ff.). The fact that those coins clearly have the legend Α-Ι, rather than Α-Πon the present piece, was explained by viewing the club as being a large Ι: this does seem to be reaching a bit! The possible attribution to Antissa, a town on Lesbos, has more to recommend itself. There are a number of late 4th/3rd century AE coins from Antissa (probably chalkoi - as Waddington 635), which have the same reverse type and legend. In addition, early 5th century billon obols, commonly attributed to Mytilene, bear the head of a young African male on their obverses: yet one, as Traité 2, I, 599 and pl. xv, 9, has a clear Α on the reverse (in a lozenge-shaped incuse), thus suggesting the series was minted in Antissa too.

The letters ΛΕ denote the coin is from the island of Lesbos. There are 5 different electrum coin emissions of Mytilene that include the letters ΛΕ - B14, B20, B23, B28 and B35.

Only 3 examples known of this type. Obverse of all examples is die match with Bodenstedt 82 that he described as head of Leda. The obverse die for Bodenstedt 82 has a reverse of a swan and is only known by 2 specimens. The reverse of this coin is Nike. The inscription is not complete on any of the 3 examples known, but it is clear that the letters are N-I/K-A. Silvia Hurter, in her article on this specific example, notes that the inscription makes it clear that the reverse is Nike and it can be inferred that this coin was struck to commemorate a victory, but which is uncertain (see Die Nike von Mytilene: Eine anonyme Siegespragung, SM 202, June 2001, pp. 21-22).
