According to Homer, the abduction of Persephone took place somewhere in the "Nysion pedion." It mattered little that Lydian Nysa was a forth century foundation; a cult of the underworld grew up there. The town had a Plutonium, and in later times a festival called the Theogamia celebrated the abduction itself." (W. E. Metcalf, a. O., p. 50).

A splendid piece, with a fine, glossy, dark green patina. Struck in high relief and especially attractive. Good extremely fine. From a Swiss private collection.
Omphale, a mythical queen of Lydia, received Herakles to do her bidding for a year in punishment for his murder of Iphytos. He even had to help her with her spinning, and she, as we see here, wore his lion’s skin and wielded his club. Struck by his charm she later freed and married him, and their children were the ancestors of the later Heraklid dynasty of Sardeis.

Philadelphia (AD 35-37) AE 16 - Tiberius Gemellus1130 viewsTiberius Gemellus(?), co-heir of Tiberius. AE16 (3.18g), struck ca 35-37 AD. TIBERION [CEBACTON], bare head of Tiberius Gemellus(?) right / N[EO]KEC"PEIC, winged thunderbolt. Dark green patina, gF. Extremely rare.
Tiberius Gemellus, born 19 AD, was twin brother to Germanicus Gemellus. They were the sons of Livilla, sister of Germanicus and Claudius, and given to her husband Drusus, son of emperor Tiberius. However, it is probable that they were fathered by Sejanus, the ambitious prefect of Tiberius. During the last years of Tiberius' life, his options for an heir had narrowed to his only 'grandson' Tiberius Gemellus and his grandnephew Caligula. Both men were adopted as co-heirs in 35. However, when Tiberius died in 37, the prefect Macro declared Caligula the new emperor, as the two had prearranged. For appearances, Tiberius Gemellus was hailed princeps iuventutis, but within months was executed for treason. This portrait is especially important because it depicts him not as a child, but as a teen and heir to the throne. All coins from this issue share the same obverse die.

Sardeis (AD 23-26) AE 27 - Germanicus and Drusus1099 viewsGermanicus and Drusus, Caesars, ca 23-26 AD. AE27 (12.14g), restruck ca 28-29 AD by Asinius Pollio, Proconsul. Drusus and Germanicus seated left in curule chairs / Legend in wreath; ΓΑΙΩ ΑΣΙΝΝΙΩ ΠΟΛΛΙΩΝΙ ΑΝΘΥΠΑΤΩ around (overstruck on original legend). VF, green patina, slightly rough surfaces.
This interesting coin appears to be an original issue, but in actuality, it is an earlier issue that is restruck with two intricate 'countermarks.' These 'countermarks' were ring-shaped punch restrikings of the legends that surround the obverse and reverse designs. While the obverse 'countermark-legend' is the same as that which appeared on the original striking, the reverse legend, originally ΕΠΙ ΑΡΧΙΕΠΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ ΚΛΕΩΝΟΣ ΣΑΡΔΙΑΝΟΥ, has been totally replaced by a new 'countermark-legend.'

Bare head right / Hades dragging away protesting Persephone in quadriga right; overturned basket of flowers below. VF, small area of flat strike in obverse legend. Overstruck on a cistophorus of Augustus. Extremely rare. This unique example depicts a winged figure holding the wedding torch, or taeda, above the horses. This is Hymenaeus, one of the erotes and the personification of the Hymenaea, or wedding song sung outside the bridal chamber. Metcalf's attribution to this mint is based on the regional association of this reverse type.

Unpublished in the major references.
The magistrate Hermokrates is known for Apollonis through several coins of Lucius Verus. The portrait and titles suggest a date late in Aurelius' service as Caesar or immediately after he succeeded Antoninus Pius in 161 AD. The second magistrate, Aeschrion, is known from one other coin, also of Lucius Verus, from Apollonia, which has been identified as Apollonia Salbace in Caria, Mionnet III pg. 332, 173). It is tempting to see them as the same person. But Apollonis in Lydia and Apollonia Salbace are some distance apart, and it is difficult to see the connection. However, there are a number of other Apollonias in Asia Minor, and one of them, Apollonia on the Caicus in Mysia, is only some 20 miles from Apollonis. Perhaps the two close neighbors shared more than a similarity in names, and there was a civic connection.

In previous sales, this issue has been attributed to either Cycladic Naxos or Syros. While both cities struck coins with same types, all of these cities’ bronzes consistently bear the first two letters of their respective ethnic flanking the base of the kantharos. On this issue, these Greek letters have been replaced by two Lydian letters, allowing its correct attribution to a mint in Lydia. Sardeis is a possibility, as it’s spelling in Lydian was Sfard.

In Treasures of Ancient Coinage: From the Private Collections of ANS Members, Catharine Lorber catalogued a coin of Maximinus I Thrax from Anchialus in Thrace with a very similar reverse type (see p. 121, no. 110). Lorber summarized the type as "...a symbolic map of the cosmos. Zeus, chief of the gods, is the central figure... Surrounding this scene is a broad band containing the twelve signs of the zodiac. The entire design reflects the common belief of 3rd century Romans that their lives were shaped by higher powers. This schema and variations on it were employed by numerous mints for different emperors from the mid-2nd through the mid-3rd centuries."
