The coinage of Tarsus, like that of the Antioch mint, gives exceptionally full titles for Hadrian, as can be witnessed on this and the previous lot. Here we find an interesting detail in the titles of Sabina as well. The AY can only stand for Augusta, which is quite redundant as the legend also names her the Greek equivalent Σεβαστή.

According to Houghton and Bendall, the present piece appeared in 1986 in a hoard which also included seven Aegeae tetradrachms. The issue is to be dated after c. 95-94 BC, when Seleukos VI struck coins at Elaiussa, but before 83 BC, when Tigranes extinguished the city's independent existence. Elaiussa was an island in antiquity but is now joined to the mainland.

Soloi (BC 333-323) Stater664 viewsBalakros, Satrap, 333-323 BC. AR Stater (10.96g, 25mm, 2h). Baaltars seated left, holding lotus-tipped scepter; grain ear and grape bunch to left; B to right, Σ (engraved over M) below throne / Draped bust of Athena facing slightly left, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet. Near EF, some porosity.
This interesting series of Balakros has been traditionally assigned to various Cilician mints based on the appearance of the letter below the throne. More recent research, as yet unpublished, suggests that all of these coins were actually struck at a central mint, most likely Tarsos. Close similarity of style of many coins assigned to different mints strongly supports this hypothesis (see, e.g., SNG France 197 and 410). The present coin provides even more compelling evidence for this conclusion, as the Σ below the throne is clearly engraved over an M (SNG France 197 is the same die, but the M has deteriorated in the die to the point of not being clear). Of course, an argument could be made that a die was transferred from Mallos, but it seems unlikely for such a prolific mint as Soloi.

Holmoi (BC 4th cent) Obol652 views4th cent BC. AR Obol (0.66g, 6h). Helmeted head of Athena right / Wreathed head of Apollo right, ΟΛΜΙΤΑΝ to right. Good VF, toned, areas of slight die rust. Unpublished legend variety.
Typically, the ethnic found on the coins of Holmoi, if not trunicated, are in the form ΟΛΜΙΤΙΚΟΝ, ΟΛΜVΤΙΚΟΝ, or ΟΛΜΙΤΟΝ. The form on this coin, ending -AN, is possibly the result of an engraver accustomed to the Aeolic dialect, rather than the standard Attic. Aside from this specimen, there are apparently no recorded coins with this variation of the ethnic.
