EF, dark green patina, flan crack. A superb, lifelike portrait of the young Caracalla.

This unrecorded coin provides a further expansion of the games-related legends of the coins of Nicaea. "ta megala" is otherwise unattested, and in conjunction with the full legend can be read as "Severeia Philadelpheia in respect to the great ceremonies of the Nicaeans," with the central band inscription reading "The Holy Game." In the late 3rd century a complex cycle of at least fifteen games and associated religious festivals is attested for Nicaea, honoring Dionysus the founder, Apollo Pythius, and various emperors from Augustus to Gallienus. Read along with the very young portrait of Caracalla as Augustus, the legend and type can be taken to indicate that Nicaea sponsored a grand series of festivals to celebrate the joint elevation of Caracalla to Augustus and Geta to Caesar in 198 AD.

For similar Bithynian coins under Domitian, see RPC II 632, 653, and 671, which copy Latin legend “Mars” sestertii struck AD 80-82 at an uncertain mint either in Thrace or Bithynia (for discussion of the mints see: A. Burnett, “Regional coinage in Thrace and Bithynia during the Flavian period,” Travaux Le Rider pp. 95-101; Herbert Cahn, “An Imperial mint in Bithynia,” INJ 8 (1984/5), pp. 14-26). In place of the “S C” across the reverse field, however, one finds civic monograms in two parts for Nicaea (“NKA - ΠΡ” ), Nicomedia (“NKO - ΠΡ”), and Prusias ad Hypium (“ΠΡ - YΠ”). No such Domitianic “sestertii” survive from Juliopolis, but the current coin and the obverse die-linked von Aulock specimen (which interestingly transforms Pax of the sestertii into Homonoia) demonstrate a continued interest in appropriating Imperial types for local coinage in Bithynia.

Nikaia (AD 222-235) AE 22 - Severus Alexander501 viewsSeverus Alexander, 222-235 AD. AE22 (5.31g). M AVP CEVH AΛEΞANDPOC AVΓ,
laureate head right / NI-K-A-I separated by three standards, outer standards topped with capricorn; EΩN in exergue. VF, medium brown patina, well-centered with a solid strike. Hoeft coll.

The capricorn standards likely represent Legio XIIII Gemina Martia Victrix, the legion which had initially supported Septimius Severus in his bid for the purple. While rather distantly related to Septimius Severus through Julia Domna, though named after him, Alexander seems to have encouraged a rumor that he was in fact the illegitimate son of Caracalla and therefore the grandson of Septimius. This coin then suggests an interesting and subtle use of propaganda.

A similar motive is found on a coin for Gordian III, where the City Tyche is presenting the young Dionysos to the sitting Roma (Rec.Gen. Pl. 84, 27).
