The attribution of a specific Julio-Claudian prince to each of these portraits remains a matter of conjecture. Mionnet believed them to be portraits of Gaius and Lucius Caesars, an interpretation the authors of RPC believed quite plausible. They do note, however, that the index to the von Aulock collection interprets this issue both as Gaius and Lucius, and Drusus and Germanicus, all of whom became potential heirs to the imperial throne. Barring any more conclusive evidence, the matter will remain unresolved.

This medallion is part of a highly interesting series that has long fascinated numismatists. Taken as a whole, the group chronicles the major events of Caracalla’s visit to Pergamum en route to an eastern military expedition in AD 214. While this was only one stop on a trip that included imperial visits to the major cities and religious sites of Asia Minor, Pergamum’s sanctuary of Asclepius (the Asclepion) was of particular appeal to Caracalla, whose health declined precipitously in the latter years of his reign.

Draped bust right, wearing stephane / Artemis advancing right, drawing bow from quiver and holding bow; at feet, hound leaping right. VF, brown patinas. Extremely rare. Ex CNG 51 (9/1999), lot 870.
Artemis and her twin Apollo were the children of Zeus and Leto. A confirmed virgin, Artemis inhabited the woodland areas with her followers, hunting wild animals and scrupulously avoiding male company. She can be seen with her hunting-dog at her side, and the symbol most often associated with her is the stag, a possible association with the myth of Actaeon. At Ephesus the Artemesion, a huge temple complex whose initial construction dated back to the Bronze Age, and which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was her major cultic shrine.
