Lampsakos (AD 249-251) AE 21646 viewsTrajan Decius, 249-251 AD. AE21 (4.15g). AVT KOI TPAIAN ΔEK[IOC], draped, laureate bust right / ΛANVAKHN / [Ω]N - EΠI AΠOΛΛ[ΩN?] - ETOV, Priapos standing left, draped from hips, showing Ithyphallos, holding Thyrsos left and Kantharos right. Very rare, F+/-VF. Hoeft coll.

ΛAN erroneous for ΛAM, but there are some open questions too: KOI seems to be erroneous for KAI, magistrate AΠOΛΛΩNITOC couldn't be found until now. Priapos was born by Aphrodite in Lampsakos. Therefore Lampsakos was the centre of warshipping of Priapos. Here his depiction was more like Dionysos who was said to be his father.

Teuthrania (BC 400) Drachm - Prokles642 viewsca 400-399 BC. AR Drachm (3.25g, 13mm, 5h). Prokles, Satrap of Teuthrania and Halisarna. Head of Apollo left / Head of Prokles right, wearing Persian headdress; tamgha (of Prokles?) below chin. VF, toned, porous. Extremely rare, the third known.

According to Xenophon (Hell. 3.1.6), the cities of Teuthrania and Halisarna were ruled by the brothers Eurysthenes and Prokles as a hereditary territory that had been awarded to their ancestor, the exiled king of Sparta, Demaratos the Lakedaimon, by Xerxes for accompanying the Great King on his Greek expedition (see Hdt. Book 7 for the relationship between the two). The hereditary rule of Teuthrania and Halisarna by the direct descendants of Demaratos, among whom were Eurystenes and Prokles – namesakes of the twin ancestral establishers of the Spartan royal line, suggests that these rulers were not satraps, but local dynasts (for a bibliography of the discussion on the differentiation between satraps and dynasts, see O. Mørkholm, “Pergamene Coins in Copenhagen,” in Studies Mildenberg, p. 182, note 2). Thus, this is one of the earliest depictions of a Greek ruler on a coin.

Kyzikos (BC 450-330) EL Hekte641 viewsca 450-330 BC. EL Hekte (2.66g, 10mm). Perseus kneeling right, head reverted, wearing a winged hood, cloak over shoulders fastened with circular brooch on breast, head of Medusa in left hand, sickle (harpa) in right; below, tunny fish right / Quadripartite incuse square. Unusually well centered, gVF. Carr coll.

The ‘Perseus’ emissions are known for denominations of stater through 1/96th. Most examples do not capture the whole ‘scene’ - commonly either the head of Perseus or Medusa being off the flan. This coin is possibly the second best published example capturing the major features [For an example that is even sharper in its detail, see Gemini IX (1/2012) lot 105].
