Nikaia (AD 161-180) AE 29 - Domitia Lucilla671 viewsDomitia Lucilla, mother of Marcus Aurelius, 161-180 AD. AE29 (16.50g, 7h). ΔOMITI ΛOYKIΛΛAN NEIKAIEIC, draped bust of Domitia right, hair coiled on top of head / M AVPHΛIOC OVHPOC KAICAP, Aurelius on horseback right, holding couched lance in right hand. VF, tan patina, corroded. Extremely rare, one of two known, the other in the BN.
The specimen of this coin in Paris has been known since 1863, being the subject of some debate concerning its authenticity. This second specimen is from the same dies and seems to confirm the reading in Cohen. Domitia's husband, Annius Verus died shortly after the birth of their son in 121 AD, but her family wealth and close connections to the imperial court insured that the youth came to the attention of the emperor Hadrian, who in 138 AD advised Antoninus Pius to adopt him. This coin was probably struck shortly after the accession of Antoninius Pius, and marks the noble family lineage of the new heir apparent of the Roman empire. (5 votes)

The city of Pedasa near Miletos was not known to have issued coins until von Aulock published a single small bronze coin in 1975. This piece, of the same legend and designs, appears now to be the second known coin of this city. Von Aulock proposed a date during the autonomous interval between 196 BC, when Pedasa was declared a free city, and 175 BC, when Pedasa joined in union with Miletos. However, the fabric, style, and letter forms all point to a more likely date in the early 4th century BC. (5 votes)

Teos (BC 300) Didrachm1128 viewsca 300 BC. AR Didrachm (5.99g). Griffin seated right / Anakreon seated right, plucking a lyre; magistrate [ΠΡ]ΟΚΛΕΙΔΗΣ. Unpublished types. Nicely toned, good VF, strike a bit uneven on the obverse. Unique.
This is the second known example of an Anakreon didrachm, the first being a coin that turned up last year with the magistrate's name Aristonax. The magistrate Prokleides also appears on a drachm that shares its obverse die with an Aristonax drachm (see CNG Auction 55, lot 519). Anakreon (fl. late 6th Century BC) was a lyric poet who was a native of Teos. This issue marks his first appearance on a coin, and in fact this is probably the first appearance of any poet on a coin. Anakreon continued to appear on coins from Teos down through Roman times. (5 votes)

Lampsakos (BC 394-330) AV Stater - Demeter2828 viewsca 370 BC. AV Stater (8.35g), Persic standard. Half length figure of Demeter, wearing girdled chiton and himation, rising left from earth, holding three ears of grain; behind left shoulder, two ears of grain and vine bearing two bunches of grapes / Forepart of winged horse right with curved wing. Good VF. Extremely rare, only two known specimens, this being the only one in private hands. Ex Gillet Coll.; Weber Coll., 5096.
Following the example and standard of the Persic daric, Lampsakos was the first Greek city to make regular issues of gold coinage which enjoyed an international circulation from Sicily to the Black Sea. As at Kyzikos, the quality of engraving was very high, and types changed frequently: about forty types were produced in a period of about sixty years, one of the most interesting of which is the highly original rendering of Demeter Chthonia rising from the ground. Chthonic deities were those whose powers came from the earth. An important aspect of Demeter celebrated in the Eleusinian Mysteries was that she was venerated as an earth-goddess who symbolised the annual cycle of death and rebirth in nature, especially the grain harvest. The only bronze of Severus Alexander for Pordoselene, and the only medallic sized coin for the island. The edge of the coin has been lightly tapped to create a raised rim; sestertii with this edge effect are sometimes referred to as "proto-contorniates." This coin was probably a presentation piece. mounted in a phalera for display. In the Peus catalogue it is described as lead, but in actuality is a poor quality bronze alloy. (8 votes)
