In the fall of 214 AD, Caracalla visited the shrine of Asclepius at Pergamum to seek the god's help in curing his various diseases that he had succumbed to while in Germany (probably physiological more so than psychological). Caracalla must have received some respite from his illnesses as he then ordered the reconstruction of the temple of Asclepius as well as the temples of Roma, the deified Augustus, Zeus Philus and the deified Trajan. Of course, these acts would have endeared Caracalla to the Pergamenes who then struck a special series of medallions commemorating this historic visit. (13 votes)

Xanthos (BC 360) Diobol - Maussollos?787 viewsafter 360 BC. AR Diobol (1.60g). Head of lion right / 8-rayed star; Lycian letters 'ARN' (Arnna = Xanthos) between. VF. Unique?
The lion/star motif is usually representative of the Carian Hekatomnid Dynasty. However, the Lycian letters identifying Xanthos is a mystery. The coin may have been struck following the fall of Perikle in the failed Revolt of the Satraps (361 BC), when Lycia lost its independence and Maussolos may have inherited jurisdiction over it. Extremely rare, possibly unique. From the von Aulock collection and Bank Leu AG, Auktion 30 (4/1982, Zurich), lot 363.
According to Homer, the abduction of Persephone took place somewhere in the "Nysion pedion." It mattered little that Lydian Nysa was a forth century foundation; a cult of the underworld grew up there. The town had a Plutonium, and in later times a festival called the Theogamia celebrated the abduction itself." (W. E. Metcalf, a. O., p. 50). (9 votes)

An interesting type showing that Elagabalus had bestowed upon Ephesus the neocorate four times. For this sort of outlandish behavior Elagabalus was assassinated, and the city which had received this special privilege was stripped of its title. (6 votes)

Nikomedeia (AD 117-138) Cistophoric Tetradrachm - Hadrian and Sabina930 viewsHadrian, with Sabina, 117-138 AD. AR Cistophoric Tetradrachm (10.61g, 6h), struck after 128 AD. Laureate head of Hadrian right / Draped bust of Sabina right, hair drawn up in elaborate plaiting. VF, toned with areas of purple iridescence. Extremely rare. Only one cistophorus with the busts of Hadrian and Sabina is published (Leo Benz Collection [Lanz 94, 11/1999, lot 531 = Lanz 30 [11/1984], lot 548 [realized 15,000 DM]) and stylistically belongs to Metcalf's Unattributed Mint (Cistophori, pl. 27, 393-404). Our coin, however, was clearly struck at Nicomedia, based on its obverse die link to Metcalf's type B19, no. 43 (obv. die O30). The presence of Sabina's imperial title dates the coin to after 128 AD, the year in which she was made Augusta. (6 votes)
