The earliest coins of Alexandria are bronze issues struck about 300 BC imitating Hamaxitus (Apollo Smitheus) and Hamandria (Apollo/horse feeding). The earliest silver attributable to Alexandria are tetradrachms ca 280-275 in the name of Alexander, which on grounds of style belong to the years after the death of Lysimachus (Price 1588-1590). During the Second Syrian War (260-253) Antiochus II produced an issue of tetradrachms (SNG Spaer 374-376). Another two issues in the name of Alexander followed ca 230 (Price 1591), and again in 189-180 (Price 1592-1598). At some point during the 3rd century BC, an extensive bronze issue was produced (BMC 7-21), to which this previously unknown silver stater belongs, based on the local Persian silver weight standard, obviously intended for local use. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust R, viewed from the back / [...] KLA[...]-OLAD-A around, ASSIWN in exergue, Commodus in triumphal quadriga left, holding branch, preceeded by Roma or Victory; trophy and two captives on platform behind. Probably the third known specimen. From the Garth R. Drewry Collection. Ex Harlan J. Berk 131 (4/2003), lot 531.
Kraft, pl. 88, 14a-b notes that the obverse die used to strike this coin was also used to strike medallions for Pergamum and Mytilene, and that the Mytilene medallion uses the same reverse type as on this coin. (8 votes)

Until recently, the coins of Larisa Troas were believed to be from Larisa Phrikonis in Aiolis. Silver coins from this city are extremely rare, with only four published specimens, all of which are diobols (Winterthur 2767; Traite' II 2064; Imhoof-Blumer, "Antike Griechishe Muenzen," SNR 19 (1913), 87; and Wroth, "Greek Coins acquired by the British Museum in 1901," NumChron 1902, 26). Thus, this apparently unique specimen is the largest silver coin known for Larisa. (6 votes)
