Head of Amastris right, wearing Persian headdress with wreath; bow in bowcase behind / ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΗΣ ΑΜΑΣΤΡΙΟΣ, Aphrodite seated left, holding Eros, who crowns her; sceptre leaning against throne. VF, toned.
Amastris, a niece of Darios III of Persia, became a pawn in the complex dynastic quarrels that followed the death of Alexander. She had been given as wife to Alexander's general Krateros, but was dismissed when Krateros arranged a marriage for himself with the daughter of Antipater. Amastris then married Dionysos, tyrant of Herakleia, by whom she had three children before his death in 306 BC. In 302 BC she married Lysimachos of Thrace, who soon acquired a more profitable alliance by wedding Arsinoe, the daughter of Ptolemy I Soter of Egypt. Amastris then retired to the territory of Herakleia, where she founded a new city named after herself. She was not destined to find peace, however; in 288 BC her two covetous sons had her drowned and seized her city for themselves. (8 votes)

Sinope (AD 198-209) AE 27 – Geta936 viewsGeta, as Caesar, 198-209 AD. AE27 (15.08g), dated CY 252 (207/8 AD). P SEPTI GETAS C, bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust right / CIF SINOP AN N CCLII, Geta on horseback right, holding spear pointed at bound captive seated on ground below. VF, brown surfaces, a little rough. Apparently unpublished. Wagner Coll.
This coin proves that Geta joined his father and elder brother in the rather prolific coinage issues of Sinope’s civic years 252 and 253. The reverse type is something of a mystery. The bound captive is wearing a crested Phrygian style helmet and must represent an eastern foe. Yet Severus’ Persian campaigns had wrapped up around AD 199, and the last coinage issues commemorating the wars appeared around 202-203. There followed several years of relative peace, only broken in 208 by the plans to expand the conquest of Britain. There seems to be no event that can be tied to this militant type. (6 votes)
