Kamiros (BC 500-480) Stater

ca 480-475 BC. AR Stater (11.81g, 3h). Fig leaf / ΚΑΜ[Ι]−ΡΕΩ[Ν], legend in two lines divided by horizontal bar. Good VF, attractively toned, choice flan. Very rare, only five specimens known of which two are in museums. Ex Kunker 94 (9/2004), lot 1194 (sold EUR 3,400 ($4,182); R.C. Lockett Collection (Glendining's, 2/1961), lot 2409; Prof. S. Pozzi Collection (Naville I, 3/1921), lot 2671.

For dating, see Kagan, "The Decadrachm Hoard," Coinage and Administration in the Athenian and Persian Empires (BAR S343), pp. 25-26. This variety, the only coin of the type with a civic ethnic, is the only firm evidence linking this coinage to the city of Kamiros.
