Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #12590

Sinope (AD 41-54) AE 28 - Claudius

Claudius, 41-54 AD. AE28 (11.38g, 6h). TI • CLAVDIVS • CAESAR, laureate head of Claudius right / C • I • [F], draped bust of Dionysus left, wearing ivy wreath. VF, reddish-brown and green patina. An extremely rare and only recently confirmed type. From a Hungarian Collection formed primarily in the 1930s.

First published by Waddington (RG) without an illustration in 1925, Banti and Simonetti included it in their corpus based solely on Waddington’s description. This coin finally provides confirmation of this exceptionally rare Dionysus type.
