Coin ID #5880

Tarsos (AD 235-238) AE 30 - Maximinus I

Maximinus I, 235-238 AD. AE30 (21.49g). AVT.K.Γ.IOV.[OVH.MAΞIMEI]NOC, draped, cuirassed, radiate bust right, in field Π-Π / TAPCOV THC MHTPOΠOLE[ΩC], in left field A/M/K, in upper right field Γ, in lower right field B, Apollo, stg. facing on omphalos, head left, holding bow and arrow in left hand and in lowered right hand dog on fore-legs. Extremely rare, good F, brown-green patina. Hoeft coll.

Most often this Apollo is named Apollo Lykeios. But this is not correct! Apollo is not holding wolfs but dogs as symbol of the seers Amphilochos and Mopsus. This coin is part of the struggle of the cities for more influence and prominence.
