Coin ID #6536

Time of Julius Caesar, circa 45 BC. AE16 (4.28g). C G I L head of Janus / Q∙ LVCRET L ∙PONT∙ IIVIR [C]OL∙ DED∙ PR∙, prow. Very rare. Good very fine.

Julius Caesar was the probably the founder of a colony at Lampsacus for veterans; maybe a twin foundation with Parium. The colony seems to have disappeared after its occupation by Sextus Pompey. Types made during this short period are traditional Republican. M. Turius was probably a legate of one of the Caesarian proconsuls of Asia.
