Kyzikos (AD 268-270) AE 33 – Claudius II

Claudius II Gothicus, 268-270 AD. AE33 (25.64g). ΑΥΤ Κ Μ ΑΥΡ ΚΛΑΥΔΙΟC CЄΒ, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / CΤΡΑ CЄΠΤ ΠΟΝΤΙΚΟΥ / ΚΥZΙΚΗΝΩΝ Β ΝЄΩΚΟΡΩΝ, shrine in between two snake entwined torches, on the roof three acroterion figures, to the right, two warriors (Korybantes?) and a rider. Extremely rare. Light green patina, VF.

The reverse building probably depicts the central building of the Demeter cult, it shows a kind of altar rather than a shrine which architecture resembles a tomb. See Price-Trell 109ff.
