The homonoia between two cities of the Greek world was the proclamation of an "agreement" or commonality of interests, almost like the "sister-city" arrangements between modern cities. While the Leagues of Greek cities were primarily military alliances, a homonoia was a union based on political, economic and religious connections. The cities of Asia Minor preserved this tradition under the Romans, with an extensive interlinked system of alliances. The earliest coins marking these agreements appear under Domitian, but the majority come later, dating from the Severan period through the end of provincial coinage in the late 3rd century AD.

The reverse legend makes this a very interesting coin. It is best translated to: "[Coin] of the Laodiceans. By decree of the [Roman] Senate holder of a Neocorate." The Neocorate was a honorary title granted to cities that had established a cult for a Roman emperor. It is as such very common, but to our knowledge Laodikeia is the only mint to explicitly mention the Senate decree on its coins that preceded the honorary title. The Polis consequently rewarded the honor by chosing Roma as a reverse type.

Laodikeia (AD 79-81) AE 21334 viewsTime of Titus, 79-81 AD. AE21 (9.02g, 7h). Signed by Claudia Zenonis. Draped bust of youthful Demos right, wearing tainia / Male figure, nude from the waist down, standing left, holding patera and palm frond; to left, staff with flag set in vase. VF, glossy dark brown patina, a few minor scratches. Ex Lepczyk (4/1980), lot 1244.

A rare and interesting instance of a prominent local woman signing her city’s coinage. The appearance of Claudia’s name very likely stemmed from her belonging to the Zenonid family, one of the wealthiest and most powerful in Asia Minor. A relative, Julia Zenonis, also signed coins of Laodicea from the reign of Nero. The male figure on the reverse, possibly an athlete, may refer to the building of a new stadium in 79/80 AD (RPC II p. 194).

Laodikeia (AD 198-217) AE 30 - Caracalla349 viewsCaracalla, 198-217 AD. AE30 (11.97g, 6h). Struck mid-August 215 AD-mid-August 216 AD. Good VF, earthen black-green patina.

The Greek dogmati synkletou is a translation of the Latin senatus consulto, which itself indicates a decree of the Roman Senate. In this instance, it refers to the renewal of Laodicea’s neocorate status, which occurred during Caracalla’s visit there while making his way east to fight the Parthians.

Laodikeia (AD 62-65) AE 16 - Poppaea396 viewsPoppaea, Augusta, 62-65 AD. AE16 (4.39g, 12h). Julia Zenonis, possibly the wife of the euergetes Julius Andronicus. Struck ca 62 AD(?). Draped bust right / Aphrodite standing facing, head right, holding scepter and apple. Good VF, brown patina. Only two cited in RPC and three on CoinArchives. Possibly the sixth and finest known.

A rare and interesting instance of a prominent local woman signing her city’s coinage. In RPC, it is tentatively suggested that Julia Zenonis was the wife of the euergetes Julius Andronicus, with the husband being responsible for the larger module coins, either pseudo–autonomous or in the name of Nero, and the wife responsible for two smaller module types, one pseudo–autonomous and the other (as our coin) in the name of the empress Poppaea. This high honor of having her name appear on Laodicea’s coinage very likely stemmed from her belonging to the Zenonid family, one of the wealthiest and most powerful in Asia Minor.

This medallion commemorates an otherwise unknown address of the emperor Caracalla to the leading citizens of Laodicea during that emperor’s advance across Asia Minor to meet the Persians. This issue appears to have been struck as a personal dedication of the Asiarch, as evidenced by the reverse legend.

Laodikeia (AD 139-161) AE 37411 viewsImperial Times, ca 139-161 AD. AE37 (19.91g). P. Claudius Attalus. BOYΛΗ ΛΑΟΔΙΚΕΩΝ, Boule right / Tyche standing left, with cornucopiae and rudder. Very rare. Very Fine.

The inscription shows this issue was produced at the expense of P. Claudius Attalus (Π ΚΛ ΑΤΑΛΟC), described as 'high priest' (APXIEPATEYΩN) and credited with paying for this coinage (ANEΘHKE ΛΑΟΔΙΚΕΩΝ). Attalus, perhaps a distant descendant of the Pergamene kings and a distinguished man, held citizenship at both Laodicea and Smyrna. On some coins struck at Smyrna he is described as COΦICTHC ('sophist'), meaning he was a salaried teacher of philosophy and rhetoric.
