Alexandreia (AD 222-235) AE 24 - Severus Alexander321 viewsSeverus Alexander, 222-235 AD. AE24 (7.14g, 12h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Hercules wrestling the giant Antaeus, whom he is lifting off the ground. Fine, rough brown and green patina. Rare type which Bellinger only recorded for Septimius Severus and a mature Caracalla.

A giant of Libya and the son of Poseidon and Gaia (the earth goddess), Antaeus would challenge travelers to wrestling matches, easily killing his opponents and collecting their bones to construct a temple to his father. It was en route to the Garden of Hesperides to complete his eleventh labor that Hercules met Antaeus. A wrestling match ensued, but Hercules was unable to finish his opponent as Antaeus regained his strength each time the hero threw him to the ground. Realizing Antaeus’ strength waned as the he left the earth (i.e., the protective realm of his mother), Hercules lifted the giant aloft while crushing him to death.

Alexandreia (BC 171-65) Didrachm2165 viewsca 102/1-66/5 BC. AR Didrachm (27mm, 6.98g, 12h). Archagoros, magistrate. Dated CY 199 (102/101 BC). Laureate head of Apollo left / Apollo Smintheus standing right, quiver over shoulder, holding bow, arrow, and patera; monogram to inner left, date to inner right, [magistrate’s name in exergue]. VF, broken and repaired (3h obv./9h rev.) without affecting design. Extremely rare - perhaps the only known didrachm from this series.

This coin is part of a series of dated issues that began during the time of Mithradates VI of Pontos (see Callataÿ, pp. 155-9). Consisting primarily of tetradrachms, of which fewer than 40 examples are known, this series was sporadically minted over the course of approximately 50 years. All of these issues bear the same types and monogram, but various magistrates’ names appear in the exergue on their reverses.
