For a general introduction to the city of Tmolus and its coinage see Clive Foss, “A neighbor of Sardis: the city of Tmolus and its successors,” Classical Antiquity, vol. 1, no. 2 (Oct. 1982), pp. 178-201. While some of the city’s pseudo-autonomous issues are problematic to date, it appears that Tmolus first gained the right to coin in her name under Hadrian (Foss p. 180). Coinage with imperial portraits from his reign appears in three denominations: the current issue in the name of Sabina being the smallest denomination, the rare type of Antinous serving as a double (Blum p. 51, 1), and a type in the name of Hadrian and Aelius (Triton XV, lot 1393), which has only recently come to light, valued at one and a half times the current type. Tmolus issued coinage very sporadically and it is doubtful that a mint was established for such a small output, with nearby Sardis being a logical point of production.

ΓAIOΣ KAIΣAP, bare head of Caligula right / ΦIΛAΔEΛΦE[ΩN EPMOΓ]ENHΣ OΛVM/[ΠIO]NIKHΣ, jugate, laureat busts of the Dioscuri right; palm branch behind. VF, green and brown patina. Rare.

RPC (p. 492) notes: “A very large number of ‘magistrates’ sign the coins (of Philadelphia) under Caligula: fifteen are certainly attested for his four-year reign. They give themselves various different descriptions and titles: priest of Germanicus, Olympic victor, philopatris, grammateus, and in a number of cases philokaisar. The impression created by this variety is that the persons are mentioned just as individuals rather than as holders of any specific magistracy; alternatively, one might think in terms of a board of some kind, as at Hierapolis.”

Maionia (AD 193-211) AE 19549 viewsTime of Septimius Severus, 193-211 AD. AE19 (4.35g, 6h). Damas, magistrate. Bearded head of Hercules left / Omphale advancing right, wearing Hercules’ lion skin and carrying his club. VF, earthen green patina. Group CEM.

In expiation for his murder of Iphitos at Tiryns, Hercules was compelled by the Delphic oracle to serve Omphale, Queen of Lydia, for one year. During this time, he performed a number of labors, similar to those which he undertook while serving Eurystheus, including the capture of the Kerkopes, the killing of the Syleus, and the conquest of the city of the Itones. At the same time, he was forced to wear women’s clothing and spin wool and, according to the poet Ovid (Fasti 2.305), Omphale even wore Hercules’ lion skin and carried his club while ordering him about. However, these actions seemed to have little ill-effect on the hero; after his year’s service was completed, Hercules married Omphale.

Dark brown patina with earthen highlights.

An issue struck under the magistrate and high priest, Flavios Praxeas, who held his office for life. This coin is curious, as it is struck in brass, thus supposing it to have been intended as a coin of higher value than recorded. Also, forepart of a deer on the reverse (unrecorded variety).

Sardeis (AD 98-180) AE 221141 views2nd-3rd century AD. AE22 - Diassarion (5.22g, 6h). Bearded head of Herakles left / CARDI - ANWN, Omphale standing right with lion's skin over shoulders, holding club in left hand and drapery with right. A splendid piece, with a fine, glossy, dark green patina. Struck in high relief and especially attractive. Good extremely fine. From a Swiss private collection.

Omphale, a mythical queen of Lydia, received Herakles to do her bidding for a year in punishment for his murder of Iphytos. He even had to help her with her spinning, and she, as we see here, wore his lion’s skin and wielded his club. Struck by his charm she later freed and married him, and their children were the ancestors of the later Heraklid dynasty of Sardeis.
