Other than that his name was Marceullus, the identity of and office held by the individual depicted on this issue is uncertain. Certainly he held office worthy of this coinage, but during this period, no Marcellus is known to have served as a proconsul in Asia, nor is there any other reference to such an individual having served in any other important capacity. The only possibility that seems plausible is that he was a legate dispatched to attend to some important duty in Asia in the mid-1st century AD.

EF, green and red patina with earthen overtones. Extremely rare. The pompa, or procession, was a prominent part of the religious festivals and games of the Greco-Roman world. Often opening the associated games or accompanying the sacrifices, monumental images of the deity would be publicly conveyed (Ovid, Trist. 4.2-3, 6). Such was the Roman pompa circensis which preceded the games in the circus and was part of the celebration of a triumph. Likewise, the inception of a new consulship occasioned celebrations which also would have included the display of such images. Some such event must have been the occasion for the pompa depicted on this medallion, though a more specific event is as yet unknown. The archierus mentioned may be the Junius Titianus who was consul with Philip I in AD 245 (Cod. Theod. 6.39.2).Jul 02, 2008

Prymnessos (AD 240-260) AE 24585 viewsImperial Times, mid-3rd century AD. AE24 (7.30g, 7h). Draped bust of King Midas right, wearing Phrygian cap / Dikaiosyne standing left, holding scales and sceptre. Good VF, black-green patina with lighter green overtones, small hairline flan crack. A rare mythological type. Ex Drewry Coll.

Midas, the mytho-historical king of Phrygia and Lydia, was granted the so-called "Golden Touch" by Dionysus because the king wished for unending wealth as a reward for his guest-friendship to Silenus. Everything Midas touched turned to gold, including food. Starving and pleading for relief, the king was instructed to bathe in the waters of the river Pactolus. The water removed Midas’ “gift” and turned the sand of the river-bed into grains of gold. It was the naturally-occuring ore of the Pactolus that became the source of the metal used in the first archaic electrum coinages of Asia Minor.

ΑΥΤ Κ Λ CЄΠΤ - CЄΟΥΗΡΟC ΠЄΡ-ΤΙ, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right / ЄPI AGWNOQ-î-T-OU ARTî MA/Γ / APAMЄIΩN, Athena, wearing long chiton and peplos, seated left on rock, shield at her side, helmeted head turned right, playing double aulos and checking her image reflected in the water; she is watched by Marsyas, nude, hidden behind rock in upper left field. Very rare and interesting mythological representation. Dark, olive patina.

Athena was believed to have invented the aulos (double pipe). Hera and Aphrodite laughed when Athena played her pipes because her puffed cheeks distorted her face. Suspicious Athena decided to see for herself by observing her reflection in a river as she played. Upon seeing the unflattering result, she discarded the pipes, which were then picked up by Marsyas; Marsyas later challenged Apollo to a contest, matching his pipes with Apollo's lyre. Apollo won and flayed Marsyas as his punishment.
