Abydos (AD 222-235) AE 33 - Severus Alexander1331 viewsSeverus Alexander, 222-235 AD. AE33 - Medallion (23.00g, 7h). IMP C IMVIP SEV ALEXANDRO AVC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / ABΥΔH-NΩ-N, Nude Leander accompanied by Eros with torch, swimming right, crossing the Hellespont (Dardanelles), bust of Hero on top of light tower of Sestos facing left, holding oil lamp in her outstretched right hand to bring light in to the darkness of the night over the Hellespont. Very Fine.

Hero and Leander were one of the most famous lovers in ancient mythology. Hero was a priestess of Aphrodite who lived in the city of Sestos (on the Dardanelles). Leander was a young man from Abydos who lived on the opposite Asian side of the strait. Leander fell in love with Hero, but his parents were against a marriage. He would swim every night across the Hellespont to be with her secretly. Hero always would light a lamp at the top of her tower to guide her lover his way. However, one stormy night the waves tossed Leander in the sea and the breezes blew out Hero's light. Leander lost his way and drowned. When Hero saw his dead body, she threw herself over the edge of the tower to her death to be with him.

Alexandreia (AD 222-235) AE 24 - Severus Alexander325 viewsSeverus Alexander, 222-235 AD. AE24 (7.14g, 12h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Hercules wrestling the giant Antaeus, whom he is lifting off the ground. Fine, rough brown and green patina. Rare type which Bellinger only recorded for Septimius Severus and a mature Caracalla.

A giant of Libya and the son of Poseidon and Gaia (the earth goddess), Antaeus would challenge travelers to wrestling matches, easily killing his opponents and collecting their bones to construct a temple to his father. It was en route to the Garden of Hesperides to complete his eleventh labor that Hercules met Antaeus. A wrestling match ensued, but Hercules was unable to finish his opponent as Antaeus regained his strength each time the hero threw him to the ground. Realizing Antaeus’ strength waned as the he left the earth (i.e., the protective realm of his mother), Hercules lifted the giant aloft while crushing him to death.

The obverse type of a ram’s head left is very similar, stylistically, to the early coinage of Kebren. Although the type is not published with a tunny fish beneath the ram’s head, which is usually indicative of Kyzikos, there are other symbols, such as a bird, that do appear on the Kebren coinage beneath the ram.

Ilion (AD 198-217) AE 25 - Caracalla477 viewsCaracalla,198-217 AD. AE25 (10.65g, 12h). Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / IΛIΩN, on l. Herakles standing r. resting on club with r., lion's skin on shoulder, wreath in l.; on r. Hesione standing l., holding dress with l. hand and raising r.; sea-monster between them. gVF.

This is a new theme for the coins and not a tactful one. Laomedon had cheated Poseidon of his promised hire for building the walls of Troy and Poseidon sent a sea-monster to ravage the land. In response to an oracle Laomedon sought to avert disaster by chaining his daughter Hesione on the sea shore to be the monster's victim. Heracles, arriving in the Troad in connection with the Argonautic expedition or in pursuit of the girdle of the queen of the Amazons, killed the monster and rescued the maiden. Laomedon promised him, as a reward, the horses which Zeus had given him, but when he went back on his promise, Heracles later assaulted and captured the city. The Trojan part in this affair is far from edifying and it is not surprising that the story was dropped from the repertory of the die-sinkers (A.R. Bellinger, Troy, The Coins. Supplementary Monograph 2, University of Cincinnati, 1961, p.64).

VF, toned, typical areas of weak strike, some porosity. Very rare. Ex Cahn Coll.; Auctiones 8 (6/1978), lot 236.

This coin is from the earliest issue of coinage at Tenedos. Although some place this issue in the late 6th century, there are no coins of this type in any hoard recorded before the mid-5th century. In fact, only two 5th century hoards record coins of Tenedos: Troas, 1969 (IGCH 1188), deposited ca 450 BC, and Massyaf, 1961 (IGCH 1483 = CH 8, 587 = CH 9, 362), deposited ca 425-420 BC. The former contained two coins of Tenedos, but further information was not recorded. The second hoard contained a single didrachm, which was from the same issue as the present coin (cf. C.M. Kraay & P.R.S. Moorey, “Two fifth century hoards from the Near East,” RN 1968, pl. XXVI, 57). That coin exhibits little wear, supporting a likely date of issue in the early to mid 5th century BC.
