Thorius Flaccus served as proconsul of the province of Bithynia under Augustus. He is only known from his coin issues at Nicaea (RPC 2027-30) and Nicomedia (RPC 2062-3). M. Grant, in FITA (p. 384), listed his dates in office as 29-28 BC, but this was based on an assumed similarity in portrait with a cistophorus minted in 28 BC, which has now been discounted (see RPC p. 337).

Prusa ad Olympum (AD 193) AE 23 - Didius Julianus802 viewsDidius Julianus, 193 AD. AE23 (4.28g). AVT K M ΔIΔIOC-[IOVΛI]ANOC AVG, laureate, cuirassed bust right / ΠP-OV / CAEΩN, six-columned temple, mint name in Greek across field and in exergue. Extremely rare. Awkwardly shaped flan. aEF.

Prusa was apparently the only provincial mint to strike coins for Julianus and his family, and the Recueil General knew only one specimen for Julianus himself, that in the BM. The elevation of Julianus in Rome caused the revolt of Pescennius Niger in Syria, but obviously there would have been a period of two or three weeks in Bithynia in mid-late April 193, between the announcement of Julianus' elevation and the arrival of news of Niger's revolt. This coin was struck within this very brief time frame.

The nymph Daphne, the daughter of the local river-god Peneus, attracted the unwelcome advances of Apollo. As he aggressively pursued her, Daphne, wishing to put a stop to his advances, prayed to her father to help her. Peneus transformed her on the spot into a laurel tree (Greek Dafnh). Heartbroken, Apollo declared that this tree would be special to him, and made the laurel his sacred tree.

Nikaia (BC 47-46) AE 24 - Julius Caesar1648 viewsJulius Caesar, 47/6 BC. AE24 - Assarion (8.38g, 11h). C. Vibius Pansa, proconsul. Dated CY 236 (47/6 BC). Near VF, black patina. Ex Drewry Coll.

This type was the first anywhere to feature the portrait of Julius Caesar. C. Vibius Pansa was part of the Caesarian faction at Rome, and probably owed his proconsulship to his patron. The only other definite lifetime portrait of Caesar from the provincial series was an issue of ca 45 BC at Lampsacus (RPC I 2268-9). Both of these issues preceded the earliest appearance of his portrait at Rome, on the denarii of M. Mettius in January 44 BC.

Nikaia (AD 161-180) AE 29 - Domitia Lucilla662 viewsDomitia Lucilla, mother of Marcus Aurelius, 161-180 AD. AE29 (16.50g, 7h). ΔOMITI ΛOYKIΛΛAN NEIKAIEIC, draped bust of Domitia right, hair coiled on top of head / M AVPHΛIOC OVHPOC KAICAP, Aurelius on horseback right, holding couched lance in right hand. VF, tan patina, corroded. Extremely rare, one of two known, the other in the BN.

The specimen of this coin in Paris has been known since 1863, being the subject of some debate concerning its authenticity. This second specimen is from the same dies and seems to confirm the reading in Cohen. Domitia's husband, Annius Verus died shortly after the birth of their son in 121 AD, but her family wealth and close connections to the imperial court insured that the youth came to the attention of the emperor Hadrian, who in 138 AD advised Antoninus Pius to adopt him. This coin was probably struck shortly after the accession of Antoninius Pius, and marks the noble family lineage of the new heir apparent of the Roman empire.

Bithynion-Hadriana (AD 130) AE 38 - Antinoüs1531 viewsAntinoüs, favorite of Hadrian, died 130 AD. AE38 - Medallion (45.49g, 6h). ANTINOON ΘEΩN H ΠATRIC, bare-headed and draped bust right / BEIΘYNEIΩN AΔPIANΩN, Antinoüs, as Hermes Nomios, standing facing right, wearing short chiton, chlamys, and winged sandals, holding pedum in left hand, the right raised protectively over the forepart of a grazing cow standing left beside a tree; star above. Good VF, matte dark brown patina. One of the finest unaltered Antinoüs bronzes known. Ex Dowdy Coll. Ex Leu 30 (4/1982), lot 367; Sternberg 7 (11/1977), lot 644.

In Egypt, the cult of Antinoüs saw him as an avatar of Hermes-Thoth, a messenger between mortals and the gods. Elsewhere, he was seen in another guise, as Hermes Nomios, or the "Herdsman." As defender of the herd or flock, Hermes brought forth fecundity and prosperity, just as Antinoüs would bring good fortune to those who did him honor.

Nikaia (AD 161-180) AE 28 - Marcus Aurelius853 viewsMarcus Aurelius, 161-180 AD. AE28 (15.63g). AVT K M AVP ANTΩNEINOC, bare-headed, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / TON KTICTH NIKAIEIC, nude Heracles seen from behind, carrying off the Erymanthian boar; club by his side, star to right. VF, dark green patina, scratches. Rare representation of a Labor of Heracles. Apparently unpublished.

The canonical representation of the fourth labor of Heracles, the capture of the Erymanthean Boar, in sculpture, painting, and coins shows the hero carrying his prize "piggy-back" over his shoulder, sometimes in the act of surprising Eurystheos with it, who hides in a pithos in fright. The present, apparently unpublished piece, has the hero, labeled "The Founder of the Nicaeans," carrying the beast in front of him. There seems to be only one numismatic parallel for this depiction: a medallion of Commodus (Gnecchi 34; Stoll 103), where Heracles is seen in a similar stance, but with the boar on a rock in front of him and the Nemean Lion behind. On this medallion the scene could be interpreted to show Heracles carrying the boar to the rock.

Nikaia (AD 198-217) AE 34 - Caracalla627 viewsCaracalla, 198-217 AD. AE34 (27.92g). AVT K M AVPH ANTΩNINOC AVΓOV, youthful laureate and cuirassed bust right / CEOVHPIA ΦIΛAΔEΛΦEIA TA MEΓAΛA NIKAIEΩN, ornate prize crown with two palms; IEPOC AΓON in central band. EF, dark green patina, flan crack. A superb, lifelike portrait of the young Caracalla.

This unrecorded coin provides a further expansion of the games-related legends of the coins of Nicaea. "ta megala" is otherwise unattested, and in conjunction with the full legend can be read as "Severeia Philadelpheia in respect to the great ceremonies of the Nicaeans," with the central band inscription reading "The Holy Game." In the late 3rd century a complex cycle of at least fifteen games and associated religious festivals is attested for Nicaea, honoring Dionysus the founder, Apollo Pythius, and various emperors from Augustus to Gallienus. Read along with the very young portrait of Caracalla as Augustus, the legend and type can be taken to indicate that Nicaea sponsored a grand series of festivals to celebrate the joint elevation of Caracalla to Augustus and Geta to Caesar in 198 AD.
