Kyzikos (BC 404-394) Tridrachm1021 viewsca 404-394 BC. AR Tridrachm (11.41g, 21mm, 6h). Herakliskos Drakonopnigon: the Infant Herakles crouching right, strangling a serpent coiled around each arm; Σ-Y-[N] around / Head of lion left; below, tunny left; KY-ZI around; all within shallow incuse circle. Near EF, old collection tone, slightly off center, some marks on the reverse. Extremely rare, only BM example known for this symmachy issue at Kyzikos. MPM coll., acquired in 1928.

The British Museum acquired the only known example of this type from a dealer in Rhodes in 1927 (cf. N. Hardwick in QT XXV [1996]), as part of a group of four coins that had been found together. As the present coin was acquired by the consignor’s grandfather in 1928, it is possible that it was part of the same find that contained the BM coin. A comparison of color photographs of the two coins reveals a similar surface appearance that is consistent with coins from a common hoard.

The obverse type of a ram’s head left is very similar, stylistically, to the early coinage of Kebren. Although the type is not published with a tunny fish beneath the ram’s head, which is usually indicative of Kyzikos, there are other symbols, such as a bird, that do appear on the Kebren coinage beneath the ram.

Typically, the ethnic found on the coins of Holmoi, if not truncated, are in the form OΛMITIKON, OΛMVTIKON, or OΛMITON. The form on this coin, ending -AN, is possibly the result of an engraver accustomed to the Aeolic dialect, rather than the standard Attic. Apart from this specimen and another from the same reverse die that appeared in CNG 70, lot 318, there are apparently no recorded coins with this variation of the ethnic.

A stunning portrait of late Classical style and a lovely reddish tone. Insignificant flan crack, otherwise EF.

Ex Sotheby’s sale 3/1996, 109; Star Coll. This stater speaks to the relations between Cyzicus and its great trading partner, Panticapaeum, where numerous Cyzicene staters have been found, testifying to their broad circulation in Crimea. This arresting Pan-Silenus head seems to have been borrowed from the obverse of the gold staters of Panticapaeum, which were issued in great quantity from ca 350-320 BC; if the stater predates that period, the motif may be inspired by other art from Panticapaeum. There is ample evidence of the relation of these two cities as supplier and consumer of gold. It has been suggested that the main supply of gold for Cyzicene staters was the rich mines of the Ural mountains.

The tuna was the sole type on the earliest electrum coinage of Cyzicus, but the relationship between type variety and denomination was inconsistent. In some series a whole tuna indicated a stater and just part of the fish indicated a smaller denomination, but our coin is a stater and shows just the head and the tail of a tuna. In any case all staters of this early period are very rare, and this type seems to be unpublished.

This piece is apparently completely unknown and unrecorded by Bodenstedt. The reverse bears a large amphora with a lid: its shape is that of a ‘Panathenaic’, so-called from its use to store the olive oil given to winners at the Panathenaic Games in Athens. So, we must be looking at a prize amphora, a conclusion that is confirmed by the palm of victory that stands nearby. This means that the person depicted on the obverse of this coin must be Nike, goddess of victory. The rather sober hairstyle is also found on figures of Nike from Terina, Olympia, Kyzikos, Lampsakos and elsewhere. The very specific nature of the types on this coin implies that it was struck to commemorate the victory of someone.
