This issue is not only unusual for the placement of the tunny on the left of the facing head, but also for the shape of the ear on the feline. Typically, the ear is depicted, on all denominations of von Fritze 43, with pointed ears, where here they are rounded. Although this is likely the result of the liberty of the engraver, one wonders whether this might be an attempt to depict a totally different animal, such as a bear.

The letters ΛΕ denote the coin is from the island of Lesbos. There are 5 different electrum coin emissions of Mytilene that include the letters ΛΕ - B14, B20, B23, B28 and B35.

Kyzikos (BC 500-450) EL 1/12 Stater 812 viewsca 500-450 BC. EL 1/12 Stater (1.34g, 9mm). Lion right, gnawing on leg of prey; below, tunny right / Quadripartite incuse square. gVF.
This is the second of three known that have been offered at auction.

This obverse has very close links to other coinage of similar period. Early drachmae of Velia have a similar type. Colin M. Kraay [Archaic and Classical Greek Coins (1976), p. 263] comments on the connection of the drachmae and this Kyzikos example, noting the rarity of deliberate reproductions of specific coin types across cities. An almost identical type is also found on a hecte emission of Mytilene (Bodenstedt 78 – Coin ID #11257).

Mytilene (BC 521-478) EL Hekte - B13448 viewsca 521-478 BC. EL Hekte (2.5g). Head of a roaring lion right / Incuse head of a calf right with collar, incuse rectangular punch behind. Obverse has signs of die rust, reverse is from a die unknown to Bodenstedt and no match with examples that have come to auction thus far. aVF/gVF. Carr coll.

141 examples known to Bodenstedt, this appears to be the 227th example offered at electronic auction or sale. From the numbers known to Bodenstedt and those that have appeared at auction, the coins of this emission are the most extensive of all those electrum of Lesbos. It has been suggested by a number of authorities that this emission was struck around 500 BC when Lesbos took part in the Ionic revolt.

Mytilene (BC 412-378) EL Hekte - B68301 viewsca 412-378 BC. EL Hekte (2.44g). Female head facing right, wearing hair-net / Beardless head with grotesque features facing left, lamp at forehead, the hair covered by net; thin square frame, all in incuse square. aVF. Carr coll.

Bodenstedt interpreted the male head on the reverse as a Daktylos or Telchine, both from mythical bands of miners and blacksmiths, sometimes described as having a sinister character (a common feature of mythical blacksmiths - Hephaestus is the exception). It has been suggested that the object at the forehead is a miner's lamp. Six examples noted by Bodenstedt, this appears to be only the seventh additional example offered at electronic auction.

Mytilene (BC 521-478) EL Hekte - B14499 viewsca 521-478 BC. EL Hekte (2.56g). Head of roaring lion right, ΛE to left (facing outward, E retrograde) / Incuse head of calf right with collar, incuse rectangular punch behind. One of the finest known to capture all elements of the type, gVF. Carr coll.

Thirteen examples known to Bodenstedt, this appears to be the tenth example offered at electronic auction or sale. The obverse is one of the five coin types noted by Bodenstedt (B14, B20, B23, B28 and B35) that bear the initial letters of the name of the island - Lesbos.

Mytilene (BC 454-427) EL Hekte - B55459 viewsca 454-427 BC. EL Hekte (2.49g, 11mm). Head of Athena right, wearing Corinthian helmet / Two overlapping female heads facing each other, hair in archaic braids all within incuse square. Obverse nicely centered on flan, good VF. Carr coll.

Eight examples known to Bodenstedt. This is the fifth further example to appear at auction. The reverse is an amazing picture puzzle. Examining the reverse of B55 emissions, one can note two different types: one type has an overlap of the heads such that an optical illusions is created where they appear to have a common eye; the other type, each head retains a distinct eye in profile. The overlap of the heads is a reverse that also appears on a later emission, B62 - part of a different series for Bodenstedt.

This is the only example known and is noted in Bodenstedt as being in the British Museum (BMC 28 Pl. 32,1). It has been speculated that this may have been issued at the time of the Lesbian revolt from Athens, 428/7 BC.

Fourrées of Mytilene electrum coinage are rare as it appears that the penalty of forgery was death. This is a well preserved fourrée with the bronze core completely exposed. Of note is the weight of the coin does not betray this coin as a forgery (in contrast see B85 fourrée on this website).

Fourrées of Mytilene electrum coinage are rare as it appears that the penalty of forgery was death. This is a well preserved fourrée with the plating broken in several places but the overall appearance is still that of an electrum coin. The weight, as well as the broken plating, reveal the coin to be a fourrée.

This coin is unknown to Bodenstedt and appears to be unique. The cataloguer of the Gemini sale suggests that the obverse appears to be from a die of trite size but is the same style as the Bodenstedt 55 variant on this website. The reverse appears to be a die match for Bodenstedt 57a. The trite size obverse die may provide evidence to the speculation that there were electrum coins of denominations between Hektes and Staters.

Mytilene (BC 412-378) EL Hekte - B74370 viewsca 412-378 BC. EL Hekte (2.51g, 4h, 9mm). Head of Artemis-Kybele right, wearing stephane decorated with palmettes/ Head of an African right, wearing stephane, within linear square, in incuse square. Good VF/nVF. Carr coll.

In describing this type, some have suggested that the reverse is a caricature mask of Daktylen, or Telchin, as miner with leather apron (in front of the forehead or a leather cap). Idaic Dactyles were daemonic beings believed to be the first to discover and use metal. Allegedly they were from the Ida Mountains in Phrygia. It has been suggested that there is a correlation to the mythology of Central and Western Europe where dwarfs were also associated with mining and are to be noted in fairy tales such as that of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Fourteen examples are recorded in Bodenstedt and a further twenty examples have appeared in auction.

The petasos, a wide-brimmed hat, is often identified with Hermes. Bodenstedt (p. 267) detects the work of this master engraver also on dies of Rhodes (SNR 51 [1972], pl. 6, 70) and perhaps Klazomenai (SNR 45 [1966], pl. I-II). Forty-one examples are recorded in Bodenstedt and a further forty-one examples have appeared in auction.

Thirty-eight examples are recorded in Bodenstedt and forty-five further examples have appeared in auction. There are in fact two types of obverse. This example shows Akateon with an ornate hairstyle or adornment ‘helmet’ – no example so far appears to be better than VF, thus making a definitive description difficult. The most common obverse type has Akateon with close rolls of hair and wearing a stag's horn.
