Koinon of Cyprus (AD 198-217) AE 32 - Caracalla487 viewsCaracalla, AD 198-217. AE32 (16.15g, 5h). Laureate heroic bust of Caracalla right / Temple of Paphian Aphrodite within which cone, crescent and star on top of temple, roofed wing on each side within which candelabrum stands, dove on roof of each wing, paved semicircular court before temple. aVF. Apparently Unique.
Palea Paphos was one of the most important pilgrimage centres in the Greek world due to its famous Sanctuary of Aphrodite; the goddess herself was born of the sea near Paphos, and floated in on a scallop shell. When she arose, she was hailed as 'Cyprian'. The Sanctuary of Aphrodite continued to flourish well into the Roman era. Several Roman emperors honoured the shrine, and it was visited by Titus in 69 AD when the future emperor was on his way to Egypt. He consulted the oracle of Aphrodite, and was told that he had a great future. The sanctuary was rebuilt by the Romans after the earthquake of 76/77 AD, in a design that preserved the layout of the original. The cult of Aphrodite survived at Palea Paphos until the 4th century AD, when Emperor Theodosius outlawed paganism. Today, virtually nothing remains of the Sanctuary save the holy ground itself.Apr 04, 2015

Very Fine. Extremely Rare.
The figure in this image can be identified as an Amazon on account of the axe and the shape of the shield set against the tree, which conforms to Roman ideals of Amazonian apparel. A close parallel may be found on a relief adorning a marble sarcophagus in the Capitoline museum (inv. scu 726), in which an Amazon battles Greeks armed with such a shield and double-bladed axe. Here we see this Amazon in a moment of rest, gathering fruit from a laden tree she has come upon. According to Apollonios of Rhodes' in Argonautica, the mythical Amazons lived just to the east of Amisos in three towns near Themiscrya near the mouth of the Thermodon (modern Terme) river.Apr 04, 2015

Laodikeia (AD 79-81) AE 21336 viewsTime of Titus, 79-81 AD. AE21 (9.02g, 7h). Signed by Claudia Zenonis. Draped bust of youthful Demos right, wearing tainia / Male figure, nude from the waist down, standing left, holding patera and palm frond; to left, staff with flag set in vase. VF, glossy dark brown patina, a few minor scratches. Ex Lepczyk (4/1980), lot 1244.
A rare and interesting instance of a prominent local woman signing her city’s coinage. The appearance of Claudia’s name very likely stemmed from her belonging to the Zenonid family, one of the wealthiest and most powerful in Asia Minor. A relative, Julia Zenonis, also signed coins of Laodicea from the reign of Nero. The male figure on the reverse, possibly an athlete, may refer to the building of a new stadium in 79/80 AD (RPC II p. 194).Apr 01, 2015
