Kyzikos (BC 390-340) Drachm?468 viewsca 3rd century BC. AR Drachm(?) (5.07g, 20mm). Head of Kore Soteira left, with hair in sphendone; ΣΩTEIPA / Head of lion left; monogram to left; below, tunny left; KYZI.

The weight of this piece is significantly heavier than SNG BN 408-10, which are closer to 3.25g. Additionally, the obverse style is much closer to the following series featuring the seated Apollo reverse type. BN 419 fits the obverse style and weight, but is of the later reverse type, pointing to a possible hybrid or transitional issue. Very rare and interesting. Very fine, some porosity.

Phokaia (BC 600-522) EL 1/6 Stater555 viewsca 625/0-522 BC. EL Hekte (2.59g, 9mm). Mother seal swimming to left with a young swimming to right below, each with annulet above. / Rough incuse square. Apparently unpublished and unique, a wonderful coin with an incredibly charming obverse. Nearly extremely fine.

The name Phokaia is derived from the Greek word Φωκάι, which translates as 'seals' and is still found, as a Greek loanword, in the modern Latinian languages today (fr. 'phoque', it./span./portug. 'foca'). Unsurprisingly, the lovely animals served as a badge on Phokaia's coins, most commonly in the form of a small seal below or behind a larger main type. The earliest coinage of the city, however, still retains the seal as main type: on the present example, we find one of the most charming renderings of animals in all of Archaic Greek coinage, in the form of a mother seal swimming to the left with her young heading to the right below. The fact that mother and child swim in opposite directions gives the scenery an enchanting playfulness that almost certainly derives from personal observation by the artist - perhaps he was watching the animals romping around the small islands in the bay before Phokaia?

Kyzikos (BC 550-500) Obol270 viewsca 550-500 BC. AR Obol (1.06g, 9mm). Crab holding tunny right within raised claws / Quadripartite incuse square.

Though numerous silver fractions have been attributed to Kos or to an uncertain area in Thrace-Macedon, this particular issue would seemingly be more associated with Kyzikos on account of the tunny. Very rare and interesting.

This coin appears to belong to a diverse series of electrum staters struck on the Milesian standard that Kraay (ACGC p. 30), and others, have tentatively attributed to the period of the Ionian Revolt. Although none have ethnics, the obverses of many of the coins are of types common to various cities involved in the revolt. Kraay notes the significant problem with the theory is that none of these coins feature a type attributable to Miletos, the city that led the revolt, but he proposed that it was possible the entire series was struck there as a centralized mint. Thus the types could either represent the cities that contributed resources to the revolt or successive Milesian officials who oversaw the coinage production. If the obverse type does represent the city, this issue would most likely belong to Klazomenai, all of whose contemporary coinage featured a winged-boar forepart.

Though some hemidrachms from Samos feature a facing panther/bull head in profile, the weight of this piece is assuredly well below a hemidrachm and the style, especially of the bull, is much more similar to the uncertain 'bull' issues from Caria.

Karia Uncertain (BC 480-420) 1/4 Stater (?)321 viewsca 5th century BC. AR 1/4 Stater(?) (2.93g, 13mm, 12h). Lion standing left, head turned right, raising left forepaw / Forepart of bull (or boar?) right in dotted square within incuse square. Unpublished. Near EF, toned, patches of find patina. Apparently unique.

The obverse type is similar to the reverses of a Carian series featuring a winged male deity on the obverse (cf. SNG Kayhan 977–8 and Rosen 624), as well as an archaic Carian stater issue featuring a lion’s head turned back (cf. Dewing 2350–2). The type combination here also is commonly used on various issues in Caria; all attributed to uncertain mints.

Teuthrania (BC 400) Drachm - Prokles565 viewsca 400-399 BC. AR Drachm (3.25g, 13mm, 5h). Prokles, Satrap of Teuthrania and Halisarna. Head of Apollo left / Head of Prokles right, wearing Persian headdress; tamgha (of Prokles?) below chin. VF, toned, porous. Extremely rare, the third known.

According to Xenophon (Hell. 3.1.6), the cities of Teuthrania and Halisarna were ruled by the brothers Eurysthenes and Prokles as a hereditary territory that had been awarded to their ancestor, the exiled king of Sparta, Demaratos the Lakedaimon, by Xerxes for accompanying the Great King on his Greek expedition (see Hdt. Book 7 for the relationship between the two). The hereditary rule of Teuthrania and Halisarna by the direct descendants of Demaratos, among whom were Eurystenes and Prokles – namesakes of the twin ancestral establishers of the Spartan royal line, suggests that these rulers were not satraps, but local dynasts (for a bibliography of the discussion on the differentiation between satraps and dynasts, see O. Mørkholm, “Pergamene Coins in Copenhagen,” in Studies Mildenberg, p. 182, note 2). Thus, this is one of the earliest depictions of a Greek ruler on a coin.

Kyzikos (BC 550-510) Hemiobol245 viewsca 550 BC. AR Hemiobol (0.46g, 7mm). Head of lion right, holding tunny in mouth / Irregular incuse punch.

Most probably Kyzikos - the image reminds of the early obols of Kyzikos which depict a tunny with fish in its mouth. The lion is not unknown on later coins from Kyzikos and is mostly combined with a tunny - but no other piece shows a lion holding a fish in its mouth. The drawing of the lion differs very much from these later illustrations. It may be suggested that this coin can be dated at the beginning of the coinage of Kyzikos.
