Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / The philosopher Heraclitus standing left, raising right hand and holding torch in left. Good Fine, brown and tan patina, light roughness. Wagner Coll.

Heraclitus “the Obscure” is one of the earliest Greek philosophers whose writings have come down to us reasonably complete. Born in Ephesos in the 6th century BC, he retired to the countryside after the aristocratic party he supported was ejected from power, but nonetheless became a revered figure in the city’s history. Heraclitus held that fire was the basic building block of existence, hence he is depicted holding a torch. ”This world-order, the same of all, no god nor man did create, but it ever was and is and will be: everliving fire, kindling in measures and being quenched in measures."

VF, green-brown patina. Apparently unique, struck with dies of fine style. Group CEM; ex Lanz 30 (11/1984), lot 783.

The type of Apollo Klarios seated left alone is a recurrent reverse design for Colophon. The extended group of gods, as seen here and on some rare earlier issues, must represent a larger sculptural group in the city.

The style and fabric of the coin are consistent with the coinage of Ionia in the mid-late 4th century BC. The Apollo / bull butting types are common at Magnesia, but the absence of any maeander pattern casts doubt upon an attribution to that city. There are rare gold issues with these types at Samos (cf. Barron pl. XXX, 14-5), but it is unlikely that this is a previously unknown silver issue from that mint.

“The first city one comes to after Ephesos is Magnesia, which is an Aiolian city . . . In the marshes at the mouth of the river Imbrasos, the Ionian colonists under Proklos are said to have found a wooden image of Hera which was caught in a willow brushwood. Therefore, they built an altar beside this tree. From this altar the famous temple of Hera, the Heraion, originated. Imbrasos himself had a daughter Okyrrhoe by the Samian nymph Chesias (a hypostasis of the goddess Artemis). Okyrrhoe later was seduced by Apollo (Aelian, Hist.animal. 15.23).

From RPC II (p. 174): It is difficult to know if 1127 is a coin of the reign of Vespasian or of Titus. The titulature is the same as used on the reverse of of 1126 (of Vespasian), and it could represent an issue made in the reign of Vespasian for his sons. On the other hand, it might perhaps be expected to be a smaller denomination, if that were the case; it is in fact the same denomination as 1126, which slightly strengthens the possibility that it was made during the reign of Titus.”
