This medallion is part of a highly interesting series that has long fascinated numismatists. Taken as a whole, the group chronicles the major events of Caracalla’s visit to Pergamum en route to an eastern military expedition in AD 214. While this was only one stop on a trip that included imperial visits to the major cities and religious sites of Asia Minor, Pergamum’s sanctuary of Asclepius (the Asclepion) was of particular appeal to Caracalla, whose health declined precipitously in the latter years of his reign.

VF, dark green patina with red highlights, fields smoothed.
In the fall of 214 AD, Caracalla visited the shrine of Asclepius at Pergamum to seek the god's help in curing his various diseases that he had succumbed to while in Germany (probably physiological more so than psychological). Caracalla must have received some respite from his illnesses as he then ordered the reconstruction of the temple of Asclepius as well as the temples of Roma, the deified Augustus, Zeus Philus and the deified Trajan. Of course, these acts would have endeared Caracalla to the Pergamenes who then struck a special series of medallions commemorating this historic visit.

Pergamon (AD 235-238) AE 42 - Maximinus I435 viewsMaximinus I Thrax, 235-238 AD. AE42 - Medallion (43.95g). Strategos Aur. Neilos. AYTOKP•K•Γ•IOYΛ•BHPOC •MAΞIMЄINOC•, laureate, cuirassed bust right, seen from front, fold of cloak on front shoulder, Medusa head on breast of cuirass / ЄΠI CTP•AYP• on left, NЄI/ΛOY in two lines at top, ΠЄPΓAMH•/NΩN• in two lines at right, ΠPΩTΩN•ΓNЄ/•ΩK•PΩN Asklepios standing front holding serpent-wreathed rod, beside Zeus seated left holding patera and scepter; in upper middle field, urn containing palm branch. VF.
This medallion escaped the fate of many of Maximinus' surviving coins and medallions from Pergamum, which had their obverses scraped flat, presumably as damnatio memoriae after the emperor's death. So for example SNG Paris 2264 and 2272-3, the first of which has the variant of our reverse type lacking the urn with palm, from the same reverse die as the intact Paris 2263.
