Uncertain (BC 480-450) Hemiobol

5th century BC. AR Hemiobol (7mm, 0.45g, 3h). Scorpion / Female head right; Σ to upper right, A(?) to lower right; all within incuse square. Unpublished in the standard references. VF. Very rare.

The cataloguer notes: “Scorpions are commonly found on the reverses of silver silver fractions from mints in Caria (cf. SNG Kayhan 925–8 and 934–8), but is very unusual as an obverse type. See Rosen 400 = SNG von Aulock 6664 for a similar scorpion on the obverse of a diobol with a dolphin reverse type.”
