This website resulted from the work of two friends who wanted to contribute to the study of ancient numismatics. We noticed that the proliferation of online auctions and coin catalogues created an excellent opportunity to study Greek and Roman coins.
We wanted to gather the available photos and descriptions of Asia Minor coins in SNG-type format (arranged by mint and chronologically), selecting the best specimens of the type, and create an "index" of such coins where they could be easily compared and studied. The idea expanded into a Yahoo group, and upon further encouragement by many, the Asia Minor Coins project was born.
Since 2004, the project has grown into a serious collaboration of numismatists, including many leading scholars, dealers and collectors. This website is now regulary used by thousands of visitors every month, and has been cited in scholarly publications. It has become a reference source of its own, and the coins on our Gallery can now be searched and cited by our unique Coin ID #.
We hope that you will find this website helpful and enjoyable!
